RNY on 01/12/17

When I first requested the referral last month, I had thought that RNY was the only surgery covered. As I read more, I found out that VSG is also covered. My orientation is on May 4th and I know I will learn more there but from what I've read I would far prefer to have VSG.

One reason is the NSAIDs. We have a history of arthritis in our family and Tylenol just doesn't work for me. Whether it's pain or a fever it doesn't relieve either. So I have always taken ibuprofen if needed. The other thin is that I'm very concerned about the nutritional absorption.

I was just wondering if they will do the VSG if that's what I want or if there is a set criteria I do know that RNY is the "gold standard@ but I truly would prefer the sleeve

You will have to go prepared to make your case for vsg. Just having a history of arthritis or needing ibuprofen from time to time will not get you a sleeve.

I tried for similar reasons and was told no, also the doctor explained many reasons was the sleeve is not always the better choice and there are problems with the procedure.  I have very bad GERD and it can make it worse, more risk of other serious complication.   But having said that less risk or bowel obstruction and no dumping

NSAIDs are no longer recommended for sleeve patients.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and when I met with surgeon we discussed this. I wanted the sleeve and that is what I got. It isn't just nsaids it's some of the other RA drugs too, plus any new drugs that may be developed. I take tramadol for pain if I have to and it wouldn't work as well if I had done the rny. I had also discussed it with my rheumatologist and he offered to speak to the surgeon if I needed it. Hope you get what is best for you.
