Hello,

I'm very happy to have found this forum for people in Ontario. I have so many questions.

My dr referred me to TWN last month.  I've been told the wait time can be anywhere from a year to 2 - has that been most people's experience? How long after the referral do you typically hear anything?

Also when I was in to my dr the other day, I mentioned it to him. He then proceeded to tell me about another patient of his that he had referred and who while waiting has lost 100 lbs and no longer needs the surgery. i felt a little discouraged as I've lost and gained weight back several times and know that I have to keep working at it even while waiting for surgery.

Finally, does OHIP only pay for gastric bypass, or is the sleeve an option?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Daizymom,

I was also referred to TWH last year in January. I was sent a letter make two months later or maybe earlier inviting me to an orientation class in May. So for me, it wasn't too late. If you want you could always call the bariatric program and ask them how long would the wait be and that you have been referred.

Yes, I think both the RNY and gastric sleeve are both covered by OHIP. Surgeon told me when I saw him in February that for me there's an 80% chance of RNY  and 20% if sleeve. So I think ohip does cover both.

My wait time for surgery was 1 year and 9 days  ...  I believe they may tell you that once you are admitted to the program they do not necessarily remove you from the program if you lose weight. This has been the best thing I've done!

Yes OHIP pays for both but the RNY is the 'gold standard' rather than the sleeve.  Cathy
