Hi there,

I'm having my surgery in a couple of weeks at TWH. We received a binder o c what to eat at different stages after surgery and it tells us to eat 60-80 grams of protein a day. But it doesn't tells us how much calories to have daily. Does anyone know how many calories we have to or should take in daily?

Thanks for your help!

They don't want you to worry about the calories just the protein and water as it is tough enough to just get in the amount of protein that you won't be eating much else once you get that in.

Just after surgery.  I had my surgery done at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Tuesday and they told me to get down two Premier Protein shakes a day plus water.  The dietician suggested I try a spoonful of food maybe Sunday or Monday.  Then I have my one-week follow-up where I'll see a dietician and figure out what I should be eating from there-on forward.

Did the hospital give you a Meal Planner booklet?

The protein numbers will always be important but the calories will become important as well once you are eating a varied diet.  Early out it's most important to drink and try to get the protein in but once you can eat anything and everything then it is the balancing act of what you are eating and how much you are eating.  Your centre will likely give you calorie numbers to aim for as you progress. I lived on shakes throughout liquids then on pureed it was a mix of pureed meats and shakes and I kept relying less on shakes and more on food. If you can eventually hit your protein numbers without shakes then you can choose not to bother with them.  Most people aim for 1200-1500 calories once they are done losing.  I'm over 10 years post op so not 100 percent sure what I consumed early out calorie wise but it wouldn't be many calories as 80 grams of protein is only 320 calories but then we don't just have pure protein so likely no more than 500 calories early out would be the average.

The easiest way is to download the app My Fitness Pal and track all of your food.

My first three months I ate about 300-400 calories a day mostly from protein shakes.  During month three I added more food and went up to about 700 a day.

Don't worry about calories now, just protein and water.
