Hey everyone

So I do have an apt with the nurse tomorrow and was planning to ask her about this but unfortunately my sitter has come down with the flu so I may have to reschedule my apt. Everything has been great so far with recovery and I haven't had any food tolerance issues. I've lost 14 lbs since surgery and am .7 lbs away from Onederland. Everything is great except that all of a sudden I got my period for the first time in over a year and a half. I know losing weight can mess with your hormones but I need to know if Mirena my IUD is still effective. I live my daughter dearly but I don't want another sleep stealing monkey for another few years lol.

So glad to hear that you're doing well out of surgery!

Spotting is very normal with an IUD and many women who use IUDs still get the odd period, or never lose their period at all. Spotting/a period does not mean the IUD is not working. If you're at all concerned about the effectiveness or that the IUD has shifted, pop in to your gyno/GP and they will be able to check for you. In the meantime, it will not hurt to use a backup method.

Thank you. I just got ahold of a medical technician at Mirena since my OBGYN is on holidays and he said the same thing. He said to have my family dr order an ultrasound to verify it's still in place and if it is hen it's just as effective as it was before surgery.  He said the breakthrough bleeding will be unpredictable until my hormones level out which is likely from rapid weight loss and diet change. Phew I feel a lot better. I don't need another monkey jumping around here lol.

My surgeon recommends using two forms of birth control after surgery until you are sure everything is working as normal..

I'd use two forms for now until you get answers.  Having a period while on the IUD doesn't mean it isn't working but you don't want an ooops baby.  As gross as some of the barrier methods are, it's better than an unplanned pregnancy this early out.
