Vets, anyone donate blood?

My surgeon (Dr Reed, Guelph) told me at my one month post op, that I should not donate blood ever again, as I need to "keep it for myself". That could be just me.

This was hard, as I was always a donor, it was always important to me, and I actually donated about 3 weeks before surgery. I kept the card, it was my last visit.

My iron stores have always been up and down before surgery, in my life, but for the last year, oddly enough, they have been perfect at each blood work test. Its is probably because I am very compliant with my multivitamin and my B12.

I suggest--get medical advice, based on your situation, your body...

this was one of my "ask the surgeon" questions and he said there's no reason you cannot if your iron levels are adequate

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I also checked with a friend who is a lab tech, and the nurse at the blood clinic, and both agreed that if my levels are good there's no reason I can't make a donation. They both advised that frequent donations might night be a good idea though. I decided to go ahead and donate this one time. Good thing, as I was the only person in my group who ended up being able to make a successful donation.

If my labs stay good, I might consider donating infrequently (1-2 times a year). I will be encouraging friends and family who are eligible to donate in my place.
