IUD and PERIOD

I've had my Mirena in for 3 years now.   I've never had a period or spotting or any bleeding (besides the bleeding that happened for a few days after insertion) since getting it in.   Now, all of a sudden, I've had spotting and blood tinted discharge for the past few days.   VERY out of the norm for me.

Has anyone else been in this situation?  I'm sure its just me ovulating or having what is supposed to be my period but its just very weird that after 3 years, this is the first time this has ever happened with the Mirena.   I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen to them before and it turned out to be something very different.   Anything that is out of the norm definitely gets my attention.

I have actually had to go out and get liners, and the cramping is pretty bad in my left ovary, as if I am ovulating, which is weird. I am just over 3 months out from surgery

I also have the Mirena and I haven't experienced this. I am 10 months post-op.

It might not be a bad idea to call gyno's office just in case something is going on.

Good luck!

Tammy :)

thanks I thought it was just a little bit weird, i was thinking ok, if its spotting thats one thing, but this is full on period and cramps. I didnt know if it is because I had lost almost 50lbs if maybe it has shifted or whatever. I will make a call to the DR. and see what they say.

Remember that while you are losing you are dumping the hormones that was stored in your fat into your system.

It could just be that but it is always good to have something like this checked out

I don't have an IUD, but my pre  op "perfect" periods have been really messed up since surgery.  This past one took 41days .  Always good to get checked out by the pros but your hormones are greatly affected.

I've had an IUD for about 3.5 years.  Like you, I had almost non-existent periods ever since.  I've had a "period" 10 times since my surgery on September 28th!  They've been very irregular with sometimes only a few days in between, crampy or not, heavy or not.  I'm just chalking it up to all the hormones they talk about dumping when you loose weight quickly.  There's been no pain that's been out of the ordinary.  I mentioned it to the Dr. in charge of my case at the Windsor clinic during my 3 month check up and he didn't seem to be concerned.

Definitely tell your clinic. Don't minimize it either. Also, remember that you are more likely to get pregnant if there are any issues with IUD. While pregnancy is a blessing it would be not so good at this point. It would be a good idea to use back up birth control.
