I would be looking for more snacks if I only ate 2 oz of dense protein at one sitting.  3 oz of chicken can fill me enough - but steak or fish I need more.

As Pat said - we all have to figure out what works for  us.

Everyone is different CC - our lives and our bodies.  I don't believe there is one solution to life long maintenance so if what they are indicating doesn't work then mix it around a bit

Canada Food Guide says 2.5 oz is a serving of meat and women should only eat 2 servings per day.  Once again dietitians preaching Canada Food Guide and nothing more.

Yes I think you are correct Tracey.  That 2.5 oz of "meat" plus starch and veggies is more like the Canada Food Guide.  So as a Bariatric patient I change that to 3-5 oz of dense protein plus some veggies for variety.

If you can do it CC - more power to you.  But I would be hungry on such a small serving of meat.

That wasn't the case Tracey.  I told her that I had 2.5 oz of leftover salmon that I was planning on having for dinner with a poached egg.  She was adamant that I could have ONLY 2 oz of the salmon OR 1 oz with a poached egg.  She also gave me a copy of the diet for the losing phase, and emphasized that it only be used temporarily if I have my knee replacement, during the time that I can not exercise and that once I am back to exercising I must return to the maintenance diet.  The difference between the two diets is that for the losing phase, your protein allotment is 1.5 oz per meal.  This really shocked me that .5 of an oz was the difference between losing and maintenance.  This was discussed at length, and she underlined the protein portion size on my sheets with a note at the bottom that I was to watch my portions.

Meals also include a veg or fruit (very small portions) and then a grain (equally small portion) and it clearly states to eat protein first, then veg or fruit if you are still hungry and then the grain last.  It also says to not eat to the point of feeling full be to eat measured amounts.

And if you look at the food guide 1 egg and 2 oz of salmon would be close to 1 serving which is exactly what the food guide says to have.  I don't believe the 1.5 oz per meal during losing and 2 oz during maintenance.  If that was the case, nobody would reach goal or maintain as we all eat a lot more protein than that per meal.    I have a feeling this is her or your centre's plan as I have never heard of anyone else ever being told that.  All the power to you if you can survive on 2 oz per meal as I'd be starving on that small amount.

No she said 1oz of salmon if I was having the egg, only 2 oz with no egg.  This is definitely the centre's plan. She copied it directly from their book.

Did she give you amounts for fruits/veggies and carbs to eat per meal as in 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup etc.  Just curious what her volume of a meal adds up as I just measured out an egg and it's less than a 1/4 cup and 2 oz of chicken which is as about as dense as salmon was 1/3 cup so the total of those two add up to wayless than 1 cup.  It is total volume that could stretch not the volume of any one macronutrient.  I was always told no more than 1 cup total and in that 1 cup it can be anything but of course to make it protein rich.

Hi Tracy. I'm from the same centre and i was given the no no finger for having more than 2oz of protein at a time. In maintenance, i'm supposed to eat 2oz protein, 1/3 cup veg, 1/4 - 1/2 cup starch. I was doing the 3oz protein 1/3 cup veg only and sometime 1/4 cup start. I was told no and to closely follow the guidelines they gave us. I' satisfied on what i've been doing besides the straying once in a while. I started to follow their guidelines, so i'm waiting to see if i gain, lose, maintain.
