Im pre-op and little bit low on iron, so the dietitian told me to start taking iron supplement 300mg. I've pick up TRIFEREXX 150 each capsule contains elemental iron 150mg. Is that the right kind of iron for us? I remember reading about, but I've lost my notes somewhere and can't find it.

Hi aer00,

I am also pre op and low iron.  The nurse told me to take Iron Ferrous Sulfate.  I buy the equate brand 300mg which states it contains 60mg of elemental iron.  Maybe check with the nurse you met with to see if they are the correct iron.

Yes, elemental iron is fine. There are two iron supplements that I would recommend - one is FeraMax and the other is Proferrin - they seem to be easier absorbed by the body and are less likely to cause gut issues (nausea, constipation, etc.). Pricy but effective.  A friend of mine who is 4 years post-op has been taking Polyride Fe, which he has had very good results with and it also hasn't affected his gut.

FYI: You can buy Proferrin (as noted by Karen M in previous post) at Costco as well as they have recently started to carry the generic version of Proferrin. Price is significantly lower than drugstore.
