Sleep Study Question

Hello All!
I have noticed that people ask their GP for a sleep study even before their surgeon has requested it. Should I do the same while I am waiting for my appointments? I would like to try to do any testing before hand, to speed up the process. Is there anything else that I should be doing?
Orientation date: November 30, 2015. I have a BMI o****ft9, 335lbs (sorry had to recalculate my #'s), Idiopathic Intercranial Hypertension, blood pressure is normal, bloodwork came back perfect. Just throwing it all out there....Yikes!

Hi there, I did ask my GP for a sleep study prior to seeing the nurse practitioner (NP) ... I think it definitely helped in the process because the NP wanted to see both the initial test which found that I had severe sleep apnea and then the subsequent test using the CPAP machine. If you can get the sleep tests in prior to seeing the NP it's a bonus. That was the only thing I did prior to my appointments. Good luck with everything.

Thank you, this is excellent information! I am going to my GP this week, so I will bring up the topic of the sleep study. I snore...very loud and tend to be quite restless on most nights, so I wouldn't be surprised if I have sleep apnea. It will be good to get checked out!
I see that you are having surgery on Friday....good luck! You will do great!
Thanks again for your helpful info!
Do you think you have a sleep problem? I don't, and the NP went through a bunch of questions with me to which I scored a 3/8. No sleep study required with these numbers with a referral to TWH. If I were going through Guelph, than a sleep study would be required. Personally I would wait until you know if you need one. The NP will make the referral if necessary.

When I spoke to my GP I discussed my very loud snoring (the cat couldn't even stand it!) and my constant waking up ... and when I did see the NP she did say I was on the cusp of having a sleep study, however I have to say that the CPAP machine has been a game changer for me now; I no longer am getting up 6 or 7 times a night and I feel so much more rested.

So happy to hear that the CPAP is working and giving you a more restful sleep. These days I need all the energy I can get; I am always tired it seems, but since I have stopped drinking coffee I notice it even more.
I would get the sleep study ahead of time, dont give them any reason to delay things.

Sleep study ahead of time it is!!!
Thank you iceblaze3k!
Hi Katie yes yes yes get the sleep study. I was through Toronto Western Hospital and had a history of sleep apnea anyway. I was told a sleep study less than a year old would suffice, so right after orientation I had my GP send me for one and it totally sped up the process for me. My CPAP pressure also changed which was nice to know in advance of the surgery. Since you snore loudly and are restless during the night this would flag you for a sleep study. TWH can send you for one but might as well have your GP send you for it to speed things up.
Good luck and let us know how you get on! Sooo excited for you.
