What's up with this trapped air of mine?

Today I am exactly 2 weeks post-op. Yesterday I had a ton of trapped air. I had completely liquid cream of tomato soup (lunch and dinner) with protein powder added (my usual meals). For some reason, I had so much air trapped while eating. At lunch I thought maybe I was slurping too much and getting air in. So for dinner I made a point to place the entire tiny spoon in my mouth, dump contents in, and swallow gently. Still had the same trapped air.

Am I imagining this? I had the weirdest feeling that I suddenly forgot how to eat. Once when I was a learning how to spell, I suddenly freaked out over the alphabet. I was wondering how to spell the letter B. I instantly wanted to put an "e" or two after it, but i knew it wasn't right. So yes, I over think everything (even from a young age).

I found relief by eating a little bit of yogurt. For some reason, yogurt is my magic weapon. I'm not sure if it's just coating my stomach and making it resistant to stuff that would otherwise bother me (ie, the acid in the tomato soup) or if the probiotics are assisting with digestion.

Any thoughts?

I had exactly the same experience at about the same time as you.  It happened with pretty much any liquid, not just soup.  I'm now just about 2 months post-op and hasn't happened at all for several weeks now.  Must just be one of the many little phases we go through.  At the time I figured I was swallowing too quickly.  Maybe try slowing down?

Thanks. I also thought that... maybe I'm getting too ****y and swallowing like I a mad woman. :)

Take your time and sip little spoonfuls. I used an espresso coffee spoon and it would take me the better part of 45 min to sip 1/3 cup of soup. Try not to have heavy cream soups. Add more water than milk. Dont worry, it is just part of a phase and you might be getting in a bit too much air before you swallow. Sip and take your time...savour your food in your mouth like you were having a sip of fine wine.

Good luck you will no doubt be getting into the pureed stage around now. That you will find a necessity to almost chew and swallow little spoonfuls at a time. If you do not have tiny spoon, just take 1/2 a teaspoon each time.

Good advice.

I bought baby spoons before my surgery. I went a little overboard and over prepared I think. But, I am taking this change seriously and trying to do my best.

Oddly enough, I went to a movie today and brought my protein shake with me as my beverage (no way I can go 2 hours without a sip of something, and I figured getting protein in during the movie would be a bonus). I started getting the weird feeling again.

But, I had the tomato soup 2x today and no problem. So yes, I think it has to be something to do with the way I was swallowing/slurping.

Your system may not like the tomatoes right now.   Certain people react to certain foods that may not make sense.   One day a food can go down fine and the next a no go.   For months I had the worst gas pains and don't get me started on the smell.   Turns out that at even a small slice of melon or pineapple is enough to set me off. Tomatoe soup -  could eat no problem for the first 2 years,  start of year three suddenly I dump every time.  This process is a journey and takes a bit of navigation sometimes.

Slow and steady for sure.   Listen to your body.

I am on my fifth wk. and still learning how to live with my new tummy. I was told not to use straws because it would cause air in my tummy. I haven't had a problem with food until today during a family dinner and had to excuse myself because I was in such pain. It turned out to be gas and I felt silly but am learning what will upset my tummy so I am glad it happen today while I was home.  Also I am still on my medicine.. Carafate and Omeprazole..  Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
