Low Blood Sugar

Eating at regular intervals is important, whether you are hungry or not.  The "hungry" feeling may not come and that is the body telling us we need carbs/sugar to function.  Low blood sugar and hunger go hand in hand often.  With the lack of sensation post op, it is easy to miss a meal but we need to eat to sustain sugars.

When you miss multiple meals/snacks, it sets off your blood sugar for the entire day and you end up in a cycle of up and down.  That is very rough on your body as you know.

Never eat a carb without a protein.  Always have protein at every meal.  Even when you self treat to raise sugar, you should be raising your sugar and then add protein to sustain your sugars.

Happy Friday all,

I got a call from the dietician in Guelph today. She has advised me to upping my protein at the bedtime snack and if I can't get it all in to have maybe an extra bit of a snack to tide me over. She clearly said that my night snack was not enough protien.  Had a better night last night and thought I would check my BS this morning and it was 4.1 which is in the good range.

I did mention about the hemp hearts and she said to be careful as they are very high in fat and then you get in to the high calories, I am still going to use a bit periodically but not a serving size per the package.

I also have a doctor's appointment on Monday to talk to my family doctor. The dietician said for me to ask them to check my A1C for sure.

Thanks for all the help, support and advise yesterday.

I will be sure to update later.

Have a great weekend.

Hi Tammy, so I thought I would quickly update you after my doc appt.  She has me monitoring both my blood sugar and my blood pressure for the next month. I go back in December to see her again.  I have to to the glucose monitoring three times a week each of the three days at a different time of the day and then I have to do a reading around the time of the early morning when I woke and it was so low.

Have a great afternoon.

That's good to hear, Donna. Message me after your appointment in December to let me know how things are going.

I'm glad you asked the dietitian about the hemp hearts...they are quite high in fats (I was pretty low on those). Always best to double check with the professionals before trying something new. Just because it works for one person doesn't necessarily mean it works for others.

Tammy :)

Hi Donna, i get the low blood sugar quite a bit.. I now carry DEX 4 on me at all times. It is fast acting Glucose... This is what works for me..You can get the tablets and the little drink as well. I pick mine up at Walmart.. Over the counter.. Orange flavor is my favorite.. I keep both in my purse and car..It comes so fast that the drink works very quick..It is the worst feeling i know but this has helped me sooo much..Good luck Krista..

I had low blood sugar issues for a couple months until I figured out that I needed to add some sugar (fruit) into my plan and also make sure I had snacks in the afternoon.  The recommended way to handle a low is eat a sugary snack (I drank juice or ate grapes) and then a more balanced protein snack like cheese and crackers about 15 minutes afterwards. That helps even things out and avoids the spike.

I often eat a bowl of cereal or crackers and cheese or yogurt before bed if I feel like I haven't eat enough that day.

I know it's scary! Be sure to keep hydrated too. I found that dehydration really compounded the terrible feeling of low sugar.

0It is valled Reactive hypoglycemia. I carry Dex 4 tablets with me. It started at yr 2 post op. At. Times if i dont eat enough protein it will drop. Other times I can have a good balanced meal it will hit for no reasons. I have had it wake me up too. I have learned to catch the signes when it drops. Get yourself a glucometer and dex4 . I have spoken to the Dietician and other than ensuring getting enough protein not much else
