So I am 4 weeks post op today.. woot woot....

I would really really really like to start uping my exercise regime - currently it involves walking the dog only.... When am I good to start working out?? I forgot to ask Dr. Hagen when I saw him two weeks ago, and I don't see him again until December, and although Ella is great and I really like her, all the other girls at his office are ridiculously stupid!!!

Any ideas?  I figured i would speak to the nurse at my 1 month check up next week, but in advance of that thought I would ask you lovely peeps!!

What kind of working out are you talking about? Weights? I would definitely wait to speak with a nurse, because they need to make sure everything has healed properly. She will let you know if you need to wait for the surgeon, or not.

Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!

I would like to start on to the treadclimber again...and add in some weights as well.... I will definitely wait till next week to see the nurse, but just wanted to see what others experiences were.

Happy 4 week anniversary!

How far do you walk your pup?

I have been walking for a hour in the morning at a fast pace, with ankle weights. I once forgot I was wearing them and went into a store.. i got some looks.

I do light weights and Pilates and a lot of nice stretching. I am going to wait for the okay before doing aerobics, ect.

Happy 4 week "Surgiversary" to you too!!!!

Unfortunately, I have a Pug, who can't handle long walks, so the most I get is a short jaunt around the block!!!  I wish I had an hour in the morning to walk.. I need to get walking on my lunch hours again.. was doing that before surgery, but haven't felt that I had the energy to do it since I've been back!!! :)

Your dog is the size of my dogs head. haha. I get it, small dogs with nose issues can only handle so long.

The more work you put in, the faster you heal and drop the weight. see what you think about Pilates, just take it slow.

I love small dogs because they are so much easier to snuggle, but I miss the long walks of a big dog!! :)

I have never done any pilates, can I do it at home? Do I need a video or something?  I am also going to try (once I get the okay to do harder workouts) my Jillian Michael's videos again.... I did them once and lost a bit on them, but had to stop because of my knees, but with the weight I've already dropped, my knees don't seem to be an issue, and my plantar fascititis has all but disappeared..

I was really disappointed at my 1 month when the nurse said no weights, nothing that engages your core...etc

I have started doing gentle/restorative yoga, walking for about 1.5 hours a day, and riding my bike for short trips (no hills).

I hope you get the "okay"!

Hi Heather....it all depends on how well you feel, what surgery you had and how well it went. I had RNY on July 28th and when I went to see my surgeon on my one month follow up...Dr. Klein, he told me I was good to resume FULL activities. I asked if I could start working out with my trainer again and he said to go for it. When I asked why all the literature I read said to wait at least 3 months for weights, he said that is based on more invasive surgeries...not the laproscopic RNY I had.

If you aren't getting the answers you need from the nurses, I would recommend that you call your surgeon's office and ask that they consult with him and get back to you. This will give you the peace of mind you need.

Good luck and enjoy the workouts!

Laurie
