Had My RNY Completely Revised!

Hi Guys!

Just wanted to post a little update on how things are going.

You may remember I was having a lot of problems with bleeding marginal ulcers. Last month I started vomiting blood so badly that I ended up in an ambulance. And then having 4 blood transfusions!

Well despite being on four meds, eight times a day, these ulcers would not heal.

I came back to TWH early Friday morning vomiting blood again. Dr. Jackson wanted to do an Endoscopy and see if he could clip/cauterize the ulcers together.

Turns out they were too severe to attempt that. That had eroded my pouch so bad I was right on the edge of perforating my pouch altogether. They had even started to erode into my remnant stomach! 😳

So the only choice was surgery. Dr. Jackson had to go in and remove the ulcered portions of my pouch....leaving it even smaller than it already was, as well as a piece of small intestine. The ends were then joined back together. Surgery went well, but it's been a bit painful of a recovery. 🌺

Just a reminder to never play around if you think you may have an ulcer. I had absolutely no risk factors for them. Hope everyone else is doing well.

Hi,

Hope that you feel better soon and you get past this safely.

Just wondering if they got to the root of what caused this? Had you been taking any PPI such as prevacid since your RNY?

Did they attribute any of it to diet? spicy foods? medications?, etc?

Looking back on it was there anything preventative that could have been done?

thank you for sharing. Wishing you a speedy painless recovery.

Lorraine, I have a friend who has gone through almost exactly the same thing and I asked the very same questions.  It seems that there is nothing that they did to cause this, and nothing that could have been done to prevent this.  I count myself fortunate that I have not had these complications and my heart goes out to anyone that has had them.  My friend's recovery from the revision surgery has been slow and not without further complications.  She is an absolute trooper and remains strong throughout this difficult period in her journey.  Sending healing vibes and well wishes to both of them.

I was just specifically wondering if she was taking any PPI like prevacid? I was prone to hernias having 2 hiatus hernias repaired in my lifetime and always having acid reflux. My surgeon advised me to stay on prevacid fastab for life. Different surgeons and centres are not always consistent.

I am just looking for her answer to that question.

thanks for your information.  Was your friend taking a PPI? For how long post op?

Yes she was and still is.  She developed ulcers early on (even on the PPI) and they were trying to get them to heal.  Unfortunately it didn't work and she needed surgery.

OK, Thanks for the info. So much for that theory.

Hope your friend is better.

I hope she is too.  This week we are meeting for coffee, so I'll find out then.  Like you I was looking for answers, but sometimes things are beyond our control even when we follow the instructions completely (which my friend did and still does -  take PPI, no straws, no spicy food, no caffeine, measures everything) there can be complications.
