My best friends wedding....in Mexico

Hi all, I'm a long time reader, first time poster.  My journey started March 2014, and I finally have a surgery date Dec 4 2015 @ HRRH with Dr Huynh.  So thankful for that.  My question is this, my best friend is getting married in Can****he end of January 2016, I want to go, but am unsure if I should take the chance.  I will be 8 weeks post op, fingers crossed it's a text book surgery and recovery.  Would you go on an all inclusive trip that soon after surgery?  I won't drink alcohol of course, and apparently the food is varied and very plentiful lots of choice.  My BFF was just at the same resort last month to scout it out prior to the wedding.  I am so undecided and I have to make a decision soon.  Just curious on what would you do?

Thanks for reading! :)

I would go.  Life doesn't stop once you have surgery and 8 weeks out should be good.  I went to Florida 6 weeks post op but had my own fridge.  Ate steak for the first time no problems.

You will have to be careful but I think you will be happy you were there for your friend.

Hello

I am 8 wks now and I feel good, and I would feel comfortable (yet still nervous) to be travelling.   Im sure if you could avoid the booze that you could always find healthy choices at the resort and even bring along some protein shake powder and bars.

I actually have been itching to get away, I recently spoke to my travel agent.  You might want to check the ins and outs of travel medical insurance from your provider.  She told me its fairly common practice after a sickness or surgery to be denied coverage if something were to happen related to WLS while out of Canada.  I believe she said over 59 yrs- 6mth wait  ... under 59yrs- 90 day wait.  I was glad she mentioned it.....because I totally didn't think about it being an issue.  So for this reason I am waiting at least til end of October when my 90 days from hospital release is over.   Make sure you look into this!!!!

You would probably kick yourself if you missed her wedding---but I understand your worry about being in another country.

I think you should go! By 6 weeks out I was eating most soft foods. You wouldn't be eating raw veggies, salads and such.. but soups, steamed veggies, and soft/well cooked meats or fish should be okay. I found fish to go down really easy. Most chicken was so dry, but YMMV. If you're feeling well enough to go - I would try to make it. Be sure to get refundable tickets though, in case something happens last minute. I've traveled to the US and they've never had an issue with me taking protein shakes into my luggage (NOT the carry on.. they always confiscate those).

At 8 weeks out, you will be mostly recovered and feeling good. By that timeframe, most people are usually feeling more energetic. Go armed with a few strategies to stay on track and you will have a great time.
