Lettuce?

When are we allowed to eat lettuce? How long did you wait to try it? I am 6 weeks out today and am wondering when it is okay to try it. I know some people say that spinach is easier but I have a severe allergy to spinach so that is out.

Thanks!!

Good question. I'm trying to remember exactly when I first tried it but I'm sure it was later than 6 weeks out. I guess I'd refer to your centre's food plan. Are you eating raw veggies at this point?

Lettuce is tricky. You can chew the absolute life out of it and it's still a fibrous little wad of yuck and very difficult to swallow.

I checked the binder and it doesn't say anything about lettuce. To be honest, I have had raw peppers and cucumber. No carrots or anything like that because I am not a huge fan.

I just want to have a salad and have had no issues with any foods except for shrimp (don't ask).

When in doubt call your centre as each one seems a little bit different.   Mine says no raw veg for 3 months.   Cooked is fine but cooked lettuce is clearly not an option

I waited until after three months to try lettuce, but I don't really love salad. My centre says three months for raw veggies. I have had trouble with lettuce though. Ice berg and romaine have been better, but I felt sick after eating a mixed greens salad even 4-5 months post op.

I am pretty sure it was three months. I have never had an issue with lettuce. Even when obese I loved salads

I was about 2 months out and ready to trade my boyfriend in for a wedge of iceburg lettuce.  I had no problem with it at all, and to have crunchy stuff was the singularly most satisfying thing EVER.

I had a very small amount at first (less than a mouthful) and chewed it well, then waited to see how the new tummy reacted.  Took me about an hour to eat half a cup of shredded lettuce, but I didn't want to wind up feeling like crap in case there was a bad reaction.

I tried lettuce at 3 months out and it did not go well.  I waited another three months and just in August tried it again.  It was wonderful and now a little bit of salad with my protein at dinner time seems to be the norm for me now.  Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I tried it at around three months out. My dietitian said that curly lettuce goes down better than flat or smooth - I think it's easier to chew. I was really cautious and had it at home the first time and it was fine. I've since had a salad out although I ate mostly chicken and only a bit of lettuce (protein first) and I had no problems.
