Newbies Please read - 2 1/2 years out RNY
HI everyone I am Jess, I had RNY in March 2013 and my start weight was 255 lbs and I am 5'2 and I am 40 years old. So yesterday I went to see the nurse for my 2 year check up, yep late, anyhow we were having a wonderful talk about everything. My blood work is good, I have never had any complications and my health over all is good. Then she weighted me, I knew I had a bit of a bounce back but I was at 168 lbs, my lowest was 150 lbs ( I loved it there), and that hurt. I knew I was up 10 lbs, my typical weight is 154 lbs was there for about a year, anyways I had promised myself not to go above the 150s. Truth is I earned those extra pounds because I got lazy, I got lazy with the rules and the gym. In the first two years you really don't need to work very hard to NOT gain weight. so I started to feel comfortable and allowing small bad choices in. I started to skip the gym, and for my 3 times a week 30 minutes of weights is all I need to feel great, so I started skipping days and then just not really going anymore. The one rule I broke a little then a lot that I attribute the most to my weight gain is eating and drinking together. The nurse told me that 100% of the people she has seen that have put the weight back on do not follow this rule. We no longer have the muscle in our belly that keeps the food in so when we eat and drink within that 30 mins it pushes the food out of our bellies and then we are hungry again and we eat all day. I remember them warning us about this pre op but I didn't listen. Well yesterday after she said this to me I realized this is what I need to stop right now, if nothing else I am going to stop this one. So please newbies get use to this rule, make it a habit and DO NOT BREAK THIS RULE. We even spoke about a study that shows that people that had zero regain and those that gained it all back had about 300 calories a day difference, really nothing but it is something different for us, not really calories.
Anyways feel free to friend me here and on FB my name is Jess Shay. I also run an AMAZING support group online that is been a wonderful source of support for so many. Please feel free to join us.

Thanks for sharing your story, Jess. It is really helpful...I will be sure to continue to follow that rule about not drinking and eating together or drinking too soon after eating.
Good for you for getting back on track...I'm sure you'll be down to your 150's before you know it.

Hi Jess, thank you for sharing your story. I won't forget the cardinal rule about drinking/eating. It's a tough one, but reading your post made some impact. Thanks for that.
Would you mind sharing your FB group name? I belong to a few groups, but I find each is a bit different, and the information/sharing/people are invaluable.
Have a great day!

Hi Jess;
Thanks for this - for us "newbie's" I think it's going to be the easiest rule to forget particularly when you get back to regular life. I started practicing that in January, no fluids 30 minutes before or after a meal and I think it would help because I'm used to it prior to the shakes and surgery.
Perhaps it's a great suggestion for those who are PREOP and have not yet started the shakes - get used to no drinks before or after meals - at first it was more uncomfortable than hard and then after a few weeks it became second nature even when attending the odd dinner engagement or restaurant with the family / work functions
Cheers;
Bob

Hi Jess, thanks for the words of wisdom and the reminder. I haven't even got a surgery date yet, hoping to get one this afternoon after I see dietitian again at 2pm and get my "pass". I am reading a lot of into and will certainly keep this rule at the top. It's good to hear from an experienced "loser". Where can I find your group? Kim
