VSG Ontario
At TWH they say that it has to be medically necessary and is usually a decision made by your surgeon. Since you are an MD, you may know if you meet the criteria for VSG. I believe some of the indications are heavier weight and certain comorbidities (such as Crohn's disease). But the short answer is, No, you can't get a VSG just because you want one (unless you want it so much you are also willing to pay... OHIP covers RNY and VSG that is "medically necessary").
Referral: February 2015; TWH Orientation: April 2015; Social Worker: June 10, 2015: Nurse Practitioner: June 11, 2015; Nutrition Class: June 15, 2015; Psychometry Assessment: June 16, 2015; Nutrition Assessment: July 22, 2015; NP follow-up: July 28, 2015; Surgeon Consult: August 28, 2015; Surgery: November 6, 2015; Operation: VSG
I had VSG surgery, and it was not by choice. My surgeon decided when he was doing the surgery that the RNY would not work for me due to the location of some forming ulcers. RNY would have left me with an oversized pouch and it would have defeated the purpose. He decided on the VSG (which removed the ulcers) and I couldn't be happier. I obviously don't lose as quickly as a RNY patient, but, I'm losing and my life has certainly changed for the better :)

Oh, I remember you - doctor/opera singer - welcome back. Did you get the lap band a few years ago?
