hello everyone,

i am interested in WLS and have already completed my first step... Doctor referral !

i have a question : are there any smokers out there?

Was wondering if quoting is an absolute requirement . Is there anyone currently smoke after their surgery ?

Of course, I hope to quit but in case it doesn't happen does that mean no surgery?

Short answer: Yes, you have to have quit for several months before they give you surgery. They will test you to make sure you haven't been smoking, and if you have they won't operate on you.

Ps. I was a smoker up until I got my referral for surgery, then I quit for good. You can do it if you put your mind and heart into it!

I was a smoker. I had to be 6 months smoke free. I stopped in sept but could not get a surgery date til July 10th. I didn't think I could do it, but I did. You can do it. I thought I was going to go crazy but only for the first three weeks. Then I refused to break down to the habit. Think of it this way. You are getting help breaking the bad habits of eating ... Time to start your life all over. Take control and don't surrender to any bad habits. Smoking will increase the risk of ulcers in a small little pouch. This is so important. There is not a day I don't think about smoking but I don't crave them. Too expensive. Get yourself a tablet and join us on the forum. I'll tell you a story about how I broke the habit of mcDonlads burgers 25 years ago. I will never cry over fast food again.

Referral - Feb/14, Orientation HRRH - September/14, Surgeon appt. & gastroscopy Dr. Hagen - October/14, Trio appts. - April/15, Dr. Glazer - April/15, Revision RNY - July 10, 2015

In northern ontario where i live they wont even send in a referral until you are smoke free 6 months.  I was a smoker i quit 6 months before i went into my family dr and asked for a referral.  I am 27 months smoke free now and almost 9 weeks post op.  It was one of the best things i could have done for myself.   Smoking after surgery not only can cause ulcers it also makes it hard to heal after surgery.

Referral Feb 14 2014; Orientation July 30 2014; 1 on 1's Feb 17, 2015; Pre op May 27 2015; Surgery date June 16, 2015

Like the other ladies have said, I had toquit. Smoking poses risks for blood clots in your lung thAt cn kill u among ahost of of other gnarly nasties.not smoking will be the toughest part. Start immedia5tly to prove you mean business.

you get two random drug screens and kicked out if positive.

Yes, you have to quit. If you test positive for nicotine at Toronto western twice they will kick you out of the program.

You can do it.  I know it seems impossible.... But you can do it.  I smoked for years, quit cold turkey 11 years ago (had nothing to do with surgery).

Good luck, talk to your Dr if you feel that you want extra help to quit.  Just do it - the surgery is so worth it. Good luck!

Ps - I went through TWH and they said absolutely no smoking. Get caught once and you're out.

that is one of the requirements. To be a non-smoker. You will be either not accepted in the program or delayed minimum 6 months if you do not quit. I was a smoker and quit. I have since restarted, much to my own dismay. There are serious risks of smoking post op (and obviously nt even just "post op") including but not limited to ulcers!

I am / was a smoker.
I quit last Thursday when my referral went in.
I am really struggling with this. I have been a 2 pack a day smoker for 45 years. Wish me luck.
I guess it comes down to this for me....if I don't quit I am likely to die from obesity related problems. If I can quit and get the surgery it's a double bonus
