I have lost 120 pounds since and was trying to see if ohip would cover a panniculectomy, my doctor referred me to a plastic surgeon but he said they will not cover it.   Has anyone had this done, and was it covered?  This excess skins is causing me problems!

From what I've seen, OHIP will approve the pani surgery if it's medically necessary.  You would need to have medically documented problems (i.e a rash requiring prescription cream).  Also, not all plastic surgeons are willing to work with OHIP for the funding.

You have to meet certain medical criteria.  I believe they are published within the OHIP guidelines.  I was covered for a panni and paid the difference for a full tummy tuck.  Some surgeons are less willing to submit the required paperwork to get the panni covered.  You would have to ask your surgeon why you wouldn't be covered -- for medical reasons or is he or she one of those surgeons who doesn't work with OHIP.

Good luck!

Yes.... I have lost 100lbs + and had a panniculectomy(grade 3  panni)+ a hernia repair(muscles repaired) & breast lift & reduction covered by ohip. I payed out of pocket for  the lipo. First Plastic surgeon I saw claimed that OHIP wasn't covering it anymore. The second one that I saw said lets apply & see what kind of coverage we can get for you.  That was 2 years ago. You need to ask the PS your referred to if they are willing to submit to OHIP. Good Luck to you.

That was helpful!  Mind if I ask which part of Ontario you had this done?

His name is Dr.M.M.Elahi, www.elahiplasticsurgery.com  He has his own private clinic and also is a staff  plastic surgeon at Scarborough General & St.Mike's. He did my thigh lift 10 months later, but that was all self paid. I don't want to sound melodramatic but the plastic's have made a huge difference in my life. Good Luck with the rest of your journey. :)
