Biotene Vitamin
Hi everyone, just wondering about the vitamin Biotene. I have been taking the required vitamins that my doctor/nutritionist suggested however someone has told me about this vitamin. Apparently she was told by the same clinic that I am going to that this is also a required vitamin to take to help hair loss. Im going to check with my clinic but thought I would shout out to you all to see if anyone else is taking it. I have started losing my hair quite alot and am very concerned. Feel like I am going to lose it all...eek!!
Biotin (not Biotene, that's a mouth spray/gel/mouthwash to help with dry mouth) can apparently help with hair regrowth, but it does not stop/prevent hair loss and is NOT a required vitamin at all.
Your hair loss is a result of telogen effluvium due to the shock to the body of major surgery. It will eventually stop and grow back and you will not go bald. After RNY surgery I lost approximately 60% of my hair (as per my hairdresser) and it all grew back.
I have heard, however, of quite a few women who took biotin and they did grow hair - on their face, arms, etc., which was unsettling and quite permanent - a risk of taking biotin unfortunately.

It really depends on the individual, but generally it starts around 3-4 months post-op and lasts until around 8 months or so.
If you do a search on *hair loss* (little magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of your screen) you will find literally thousands of posts about hair loss after WLS.
Here is a link to what I got when I did the search: http://www.obesityhelp.com/search/action,search_oh/?q=hair+l oss&cx=000946886326336472648%3Ae-vpeg4uyxw&cof=FORID%3A9
