Where do you get the turkey jerky? i buy hot Turkey pepperettes from the farmers market but they are the perishable kind so not great in my backpack for very long.  I agree about most snacks not being good choices for us, it can be a real challenge.

Sorry I buy beef jerky at the local butcher or farmers market. I get either hot or teriyaki or a pepper one. It is very good. But expensive as hell!

I hear you about it being expensive but I do find that the pepperettes are very filling so it's still good value in that way.

I hear what you are saying about net carbs and I did follow that for a long time in the past.  My weight loss specialist who is also an endo and my centre both told me to do net carbs instead. What I found is that using straight carbs led to me not getting enough fibre in general, then having to supplement with metamucil etc. to stay regular.  Sorry if that is tmi but I am sure I am not the only one.  Having said that, I keep my carbs under 50g net carbs 99% of the time, which I am very proud of.

I like your ideas for low carb high protein snacks.  I have almonds in bag nearly always. Cheese I usually do not because it is perishable, is there a kind that will keep for many days?  Jerky I have yet to find one I like, any recommendations? I am going to start carrying rets protein shakes as you suggested, I inly like them cold but it's true ice is everywhere.  Thanks!

Hard cheeses are fine for days.  It's the soft, moist cheeses that need refrigeration. Europeans don't even refrigerate their cheeses, they wrap them in cheese cloth and leave them on the counter.  There are even some cured meats that are fine as is.  I sent my son on a caneoing trip years ago and he was the only one with meat and cheese the week they were away as I made damn sure to find out what he could bring besides just the dry packed crap they are brought.

I'm not going to debate the net vs real carb.  I'd sooner take a few metamucil caplets to get my fibre up if needed than to eat that many extra calories for fibre.  It's all calories in calories out and even though you don't count the actual fibre carbs in your totals, they are still calories and in one bar alone that is 80 extra calories just from the fibre and not sure how many other fibre carbs per day you get but I sure hope you are still tracking their calories because regardless of where the calories are coming from, they all still end up on our ass.

I usually get the string cheeses, which keep fine for a day but I do not trust them beyond that.  I should get more grok chips that are made of parmesan.  They taste good and they keep for a long time in my bag.

As for calories I am even more vigilant than ever as I find I can eat more than before.  Dangerous stuff!

Zizzler OMG 20 grams of fibre?!  AMAZING!  I am going to try one, maybe half it with my hubby.  I need more fibre in my life! And the Quest bars are too chalky for me.

You ever try putting an unwrapped quest bar in the microwave for 30 seconds?  It becomes sort of like a cookie consistency.  But I hear you.  I usually keep a simply bar in my bag but I get sick of those and the usual nuts and seeds.  If you try it let me know what you think. I tried the mint chocolate one and I am not a fan of the flavour.

No but I just got a microwave so I could try that.  There is one here at work too.  Honestly I just use protein bars when I am having a crazy day and my boss won't allow lunch.  I am wondering if they have these at Popeye's or GNC - I will check out GNC at lunch today.  I will let you know what I think.  Thanks for posting this Zizz, I love trying new things. xo
