Diagnosed with "Mild" sleep Apnea today.
My average number of times waking up per hour was 6. "Normal" (non-apnea) is 5 or below. So I was/am also very mild. The person at the sleep center recommended a machine, and I kind of balked at that given I'm borderline. But they said they'd do the prescription in case I changed my mind and wanted to pursue a machine. I then called the PA who works at my surgeon's office, and he said it was up to me - with that mild a case, it'd probably go away on its own pretty soon after I started losing weight. Later on, my insurance company started to give me a hard time and wanted me to get the machine and use it for six months, but then they suddenly dropped it and just approved me. I think they at first didn't notice that my BMI was over 40, so I didn't need to have documented co-morbidities?? Not sure. But these really mild cases aren't always cut & dry. I, too, was afraid I'd get tripped up by this, but in the end I didn't.

I am through TWH and decided early in my process that I was going to get a sleep study done through my own family doctor so that there would be no delays when I saw the nurse. I believed I would have the report and hand it to her and she would pass me right through.
I was wrong.
So I did the first sleep study and I was diagnosed with Moderate Sleep Apnea by the respirologist which was a separate doctor all together. After the study was done I had to wait about 6 weeks for this appointment. He prescribed a CPAP machine and also said that if I wasn't having the surgery, he might not make me have one but because of the surgery he believed that I should have it for my recovery especially.
So I got the machine which took about 2 weeks with insurance and everything. I had a follow up appointment with my nurse on May 14 (via telephone) to tell her I had the machine and everything was great. I told her that I had my second sleep study on May 19, 2015. She said that she would check with the group of professionals when my file went to rounds as to whether or not they needed my second study report (titration) in order to approve my surgery. I was hoping they wouldn't, but they did. They needed the report so I had more waiting.
I faxed my report to them about 3 weeks ago and got my appointment with the surgeon in 1 weeks time.
So it really only delayed me about 1 months time which is okay for me.
Now onto the CPAP machine, I have had it for about 2 months now and while I don't love it, I don't hate it either. I have pretty much adjusted to life with it and I have also gone from 40 episodes an hour during sleep down to 2 episodes per hour (the acceptable limit is 5) so it definitely makes a difference.
I am at a 6 as well and also worry as my Sleep Doctor said the same thing CazR. Basically lose apply for bariatric surgery and loose 40lbs and it will be gone, or I could get a CPAP but was not prescribed this. I meet with the Nurse on Wednesday so we will see!
