Ketoacidosis- Bump in the Road
The first 2 weeks after surgery on May 13 went amazingly well- little pain or discomfort and full mobility. Then I started getting sick. After a day of retching, racing heartbeat and shortness of breath my wife took me to emergency at TEGH where I had the surgery. I was in the ICU for 4 days where I was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis.
I have been a type 2 diabetic for many years, often with my blood sugar out of control- 8 or higher. Like most others, the high readings had no effect on me whatsoever. It seems that now a reading that is even a little high throws my blood chemistry off. I saw my endochrinologist today and was told that I will have to watch closely whenever I eat and rectify any high readings with a small dose of insulin.
I am wondering if anyone else has been through this problem and if so, what you did to cope.

So sorry to hear this Keith!! Quite the ordeal you have been through. I hope that they have got you sorted out and you can find a new routine that will work well for you. Bravo on the weight loss!!! Look forward to seeing you and the wife soon!!

Sorry to hear about this. I am borderline diabetic myself and they told me to start taking a small amount of metformin, maybe this will be possible for you further out? Maybe the insulin is recommended because you are malabsorbing so much at this point? Let us know how things are going with it and good luck.
