The selection process in Ontario
I'm new to this forum. I live in Ontario and am going through the gastric bypass selection process in a Toronto. I have generalized anxiety disorder, so I am worrying a lot about the process. I understand they want yo make sure the most likely to succeed candidates are chosen... But it's more the social interaction with each of the specialists that has me worried.
I have completed general orientation and meet with social work next week. I think that meeting is my most terrifying because I don't really know what they are looking for. I mean, when I think of social workers I envision battered women or people looking for job placement. Are they just looking to see if I am in a supportive situation (ie, will be able to manage post-op care)?
Anything anyone one is willing to share would help put my mind at ease.
I actually found the social worker the easiest to see. She just asked me to list some complications of the surgery (ie: dumping syndrome, ulcers, blood clots, etc) and to explain how the procedure is performed. She asked if I was aware the costs involved in this process and I said yes. She asked about support people and I said I had a husband to help and my mom would be staying with us for a week. That was basically it. It's the dietician that's the toughest to get through.
Why do you say the dietician is the most difficult?
1st referral-June 2014, sent back and resubmitted September 2014. Wrong referral-medical not surgical. December 22-Surgical Referral sent in.
March 2, 2015-Orientation session; April 8, 2015-Blood work completed; May 12, 2015-Intake appointment; July 24, 2015 Dietician/Behaviourist; August 26, 2015 Pre-surgery class; September 21, 2015 Meet the surgeon; SURGERY NOVEMBER 13, 2015
I second that, the dietician is the toughest one to get past. She wants to see food logs and journals, and discuss eating habits. Be honest and make changes, let her know what changes you've made (quit drinking pop, etc).
Referral - Feb 25th, 2014. Info Session - April 7th
Surgeon#1 - May 15th Dr. Glazer - July 23rd, Dietitian/Social Worker/RN - Aug 1st, Surgeon #2 - Sept 10th, Surgery - Dec 16th, 2014!
I have to do a second meeting with her because my food log should've been a little better. Although I gave up pop, coffee, chocolate and junk food, I should've made my meals more balanced. I needed protein in all meals as well as starch and vegetables. Although I was careful with fats, I wasn't do careful with sugars. I had a recipe with a few tablespoons of ketchup and she wasn't too happy as ketchup has 4grams of sugar per tablespoon
So I have to wait 6 weeks and do a telephone interview with her after I email her another 3 day food log with better choices and balanced meals 4 to 6 hours apart with a snack no more than 150 calories.
Referral: July 2014 Orientation: October 2014 Meeting with Surgeon: March 23, 2015 RN/SW/Dietician: June 1, 2015 2ND Phone Interview with Dietician: July 7, 2015 Dr. Glazier (Internist): August 24, 2015 Surgery: November 23, 2015 Starting Weight: 305 lbs - Goal Weight: 130 lbs - Current Weight: 145 lbs
I should also mention that the Registered Nurse will bring out those sheets of paper to tell you your blood results. Ya, remember those tubes of blood they filed up on your visit to meet the surgeon? She'll give you the results. I am low in Vitamin D and A. So now I have to take those vitamins each day for 3 months and do more blood work and fax it to the Internist.

The Social Workers are amazing at TWH. well everyone is! Especially Karyn, if you get her, you will love her. I would suggest that you start a food journal, including how much protein is in each food, make sure your meals are spaced out 4 hours, have 3 meals and 2 snacks, include what you are drinking and how much. Also make sure to add how you cooked each meal, ingredients and how much, like 1 tb. Good luck on your journey, you will love every minute of it, hopefully!

I also forgot to add what the social worker appointment includes. Basically wants to know your support system, if you are financially and mentally for this long journey. What lead you to eat, weight gain, weight loss, how you succeeded and failed at losing weight. What your childhood was like, if you were overweight or even obese as a child. What triggers you to eat. Basically to get to know you!!! Hope that helps.
