Family Dr. wont refer me for WLS
I am in Oshawa and it was a Dr at my walk in clinic that asked me if my Dr had talked to me about gastric bypass. I was having blood pressure issues at the time. We have the bp issues stablized so I just asked my dr and he said I was a very good candidate. If not for the dr at the walk in I would not ever thought about WLS
I work for a family doctor, it's not just about your risk factors, have you made an honest effort? Followed through on other things related to your health? Make a plan, food journel, start walking....make an effort to show her you are serious about a healthier future

Those things are up to the bariatric team to decide. That's why you fill out forms, and have blood panels done, and an orientation and see an RN/dietician/social worker. There's a program in place for a reason.

You can't demand your doctor do a referral for you, they do what is deemed medically necessary, within the guidelines they are given. This is true for any referral.work with the doctor to you are a good candidate.

No, but it should be feasible to expect her doctor to do something to address her situation. So many times do I read about a breakdown in communications between doctors and patients. As far as I'm aware, the Code of Conduct of the Canadian Medical Association instructs doctors to “respect your patient’s reasonable request" to referrals. The problem is, most doctors feel that they are knowledgeable enough in (insert whatever field that was glossed over in their training to be a jack of all trades) to be the gatekeeper. I once had a doctor say to me "I can prescribe you anything that the specialist can". And I'm sure it's difficult for her to work with a doctor that doesn't even give a reason for why they (in their LIMITED bariatric experience) would be a good candidate or not for WLS.

I totally agree with you, I'm just saying that maybe some pieces of this story have been left out, and if she works with her Dr it will all work out.

Actually according to the requirements for surgery of this type you are an excellent candidate. You can get a referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner. Don't give up, press your doctor for that referal. You deserve that chance to find out from the bariatric centre if you make a good candidate. Good luck 😀
Are you a smoker? This is on the Guelph General Hospital site:
All patients must have stopped smoking for six months before attending any appointments. Patients with current alcohol and drug abuse are not considered for surgery Patients must be psychiatrically stable to be considered for surgery.
I would ask your GP what the issue is.
Good luck.
