Hello my Ontario friends.

About two months ago I had an appointment with my family dr about my weight and asked about WLS. She straight out said I wasnt a good candidate? I am 239lbs and 5'4". My BMI is 41. How am I not a good candidate? There is a huge risk factor with heart disease and diabetes. I also had gestational diabetes. Im asking for your opinions on how I can get a referral.

Thanks

Hi jamielynn85 are you in Toronto?  If so I can refer you to my family doctor who also does walk-in patients.  She would hands down refer you no problem.  Let me know.  Otherwise, if you are not in Toronto, you could try and find a new family doctor or nurse practitioner.  You can go on the Ontario website:  http://www.ontario.ca/health-and-wellness/find-family-doctor-or-nurse-practitioner

You could also go back to your non-referring doctor and tell her that to qualify you have to have a BMI of 35 or higher with two co-morbidities or a BMI of 40+ which you have - perhaps she is unclear about the qualifications?

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

I was referred by a nurse practitioner at a walk-in clinic, I would try that avenue. I don't understand why doctors think they can circumvent the system, it's not up to them.

Referral - Feb 25th, 2014. Info Session - April 7th
Surgeon#1 - May 15th  Dr. Glazer - July 23rd, Dietitian/Social Worker/RN - Aug 1st, Surgeon #2 - Sept 10th, Surgery - Dec 16th, 2014!

Try a walk in clinic, or if you see s specialist, ask them to refer you.

Unfortunately, there are still too many GPs that don't understand enough about WLS.

What kind of specialist will refer for WLS? I am waiting for an appointment with my gynecologist,  would she be able to? I'm only seeing her for birth control.

Talk to her about it, I'm sure she can send in the referral.  She'll have to submit it on line to the Bariatric Registry.  The registry won't take faxed forms any more.

Did the doctor tell you why you would not be a good candidate. Were there health issues she felt you needed to work on? If there were no other problems find another doctor

No she didnt tell me why. She said I wasnt a good candidate and seemed to rush me out the door afterwards. Theres a huge risk of diabtes as I had gestational diabetes and it runs in my family on both sides.
