First stomach ache post op
Hi all
I had RNY on April 24th. I started pureed food on Friday and so far so good, until tonight when I have a stomach ache. The only problem I am having so far is with the 30minutes between eating and drinking. I find this very hard. I think I am doing it right but I am not always completely aware of what time my 30 minutes started. Am I the only one who is thirsty when I finish eating? Anyway, today I had my morning smoothy (skim milk, plain greek yogurt, and protein powder), turkey slices, small bowl of All Bran Flakes soaked in skim milk, Pure Protein shake, and two spoonfuls of no sugar added vanilla ice cream with my mom for Mother's Day. That was over the course of 15 hours. Now I have what feels like a knot in my stomach. I have no dumping syndromes, at least from what I have read about them. Just a stomachache. Not quite sure what this is or what to do about it. I think I probably didn't wait long enough between solid and liquid. Any other ideas?
Thanks!
Your "solids" aren't very solid at this point, so I really don't think it's drinking/eating too closely together but..... this is the time to get into the "wait 30 minutes after eating" habit. Be mindful and check the clock when you finish eating.
The stomach ache could be a number of things really - new guts getting used to food, something didn't agree with you, ate to quickly, ate too much, gas/bowel moving, etc. My first thought when reading this was the no-sugar-added ice cream. I've tried it a few times and each and every time I don't feel well afterwards with stomach upset.

Thank you guys!! No more ice cream for me! My mom is here in town visiting/helping me and she LOVES ice cream. Did that for Mothers Day but I won't do it again. So far all the foods that I have tried have been fine. I have been very slow at introducing one thing at a time and making sure it is fine long before I try something else. I am not having too much trouble waiting 30 minutes after eating. I do watch the clock and suffer in silence there. Its the not drinking anything before you eat that I find hard. I don't consciously stop drinking in order to eat something. I just figure that it has been awhile since I had a sip of anything. I guess I need to plan exactly what time I am going to eat something so that I can get into this habit.
I had the exact same issue last night, my 1st "digestive" ache since surgery on Apr 21st. My husband bought no sugar added Chapman's Vanilla Ice Cream. I made a shake with 1/4cup ice cream, 1/2 cup mil**** and protein powder.
No dumping syndrome, my stomach just felt "off" and I was slightly nauseous. When I went to bed, I had lower digestive cramps. I had to prop myself up & fall asleep that way. I don't feel much like eating today, feeling bloated :(
I definitely won't try ice cream again any time soon. I also thought I might have had afternoon snack & dinner too close together.
Could be anything, really. Make sure you are eating slowly and mindfully. My first time having eggs I didn't chew enough and it was painful the whole day.
Gas could still definitely be a problem. I ate something the other day and feeling so thirsty took the tiniest sip of water. It felt like the water was stuck and very painful. I thought I was going to throw up so I got up and walked around. After a few minutes it's like it shifted and I felt the water go down and I gave a big burp.
Try to introduce foods slowly so that you know if you're having something you can't handle and will know not to have it again.
No sugar and most all ice creams have carageenan gum in them. This is a know bowel irritant. Your insides are still healing. Personally it gives me horrible cramps and diarrhea

I had the WORST time with NSA ice cream a month out. Helped my constipation though :-)
Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!
About a month after my surgery, I drank a glass of white 1% milk and it made me sicker than a dog with the worst stomach ache I have ever had in my life. I thought I was dying and almost went to emergency but decided not to, and it passed after about 6 hours. Still cannot drink white milk at all and can drink chocolate milk if I do it slowly...go figure.
