what to expect from the social work appointment
Hi, guys!
My orientation was in February, and now my first of the trio appointments is near—on Tuesday, I have my social work appointment.
I'm still working on filling out all the paper work they gave me at orientation, but I'll have it all done before my appointment. What can you guys tell me about what to expect?
I think that they want to know that you are committed to the process and understand everything that this new lifestyle will be about. They want to make sure that you don't have any issues that might hinder your success. They will ask you about your dieting history because that shows them a bit about your commitment and ability to follow a plan etc. for me, I was able to lose 100 lbs on weigh****chers me kept it off for a couple of years - they told me that success showed that I could follow a diet and maintain it and that this surgery as a tool could work for me.
They also want to know why you think you are overweight. What are your eating habits? Do you have issues with overeating, binge eating, depression? These questions will also help them in determining if you will need additional support before and/or after surgery.
My advice is is go in and be 100 percent honest with whatever they ask you. They will be able to tell if you are being honest, and being dishonest may definitely hinder your chances of being moved forward. Trust me they have heard it all, and will not be surprised by anything you tell me so don't hide anything - they are there to help you and make the surgery work for you!! It worked for me. 10 months in and I am down 130 lbs.
good luck with your appointment!
They will also ask about your support system. They want to know that you have someone that you can turn to for support after the surgery. Make sure that you read all of the materials that you have because they will probably ask you about the surgery, complications etc. to see if you're educating yourself to the reality of weight loss surgery.
As others have posted, they just want to make sure that you're in a good place mentally. They'll ask about the support you have at home, whether or not your family is on board, etc. I didn't find my meeting to be a big deal... people generally get stuck with NUT and not the SW.
