Vitamins Post op
Rexall has the liquid calcium citrate, I think $12 for the bottle. I found it easier because you already have chewable vitamins, pain pills, stool softeners etc to swallow. Liquid is easier in the beginning.

Why would a nurse practitioner recommend these chews. It is maddening, the misinformation that is given to some patients. Thank goodness for this forum, and all the accurate information provided by members and vets. It is a waste of money to buy the wrong vitamins, and more importantly, to jeopardize your health taking something that will not be absorbed, and that is so vital.
Thanks Kim

Unfortunately you will find different answers even from your own centre. I am also out of HRRH and had different direction depending on my nurse/dietician I was seeing at my appts.
As long as you know exactly what your vits need to be, you really are the one to check the ingredients of everything your taking.
I took those chewable Jamison ones as well for a month or so, loved them, but they aren't what we need. I told my surgeon how frustrated I am with all this misinformation, he said exactly what I told you. Follow the requirements and find products that have these ingredients. Ugh!
I know its tough in the beginning. The calcium I am afraid to tell you, but you won't get your numbers for calcium from your blood work only, it's bone density that will tell you over time if your getting enough. So make sure you get in your amounts and more importantly the correct type of ingredients.
Good luck,
Annette
and just to add......... not knowing about the calcium until you do a bone density is only part of the problem, they also need a baseline bone density scan from the beginning to reference. and If not for this site and the information all the great people here I wouldn't have known to go get that done within my first year of surgery. But now in 5 years when I get tested they will have my baseline on file to compare.
I tried to make sure I had all my vitamins sourced out before my surgery. I had EVERYTHING. But alas, it did not go so well. OMG I'm SOOOO frustrated trying to find vitamins! I have been through sooo many.
A friend of mine went through the surgery 2 weeks before me and gave me all of her chewable vitamins because she was OK'd to go on tablets.
She gave me liquid calcium; it was sooo terrible that I couldn't choke it down. I went to every pharmacy and nutrition store in town, NONE had calcium citrate. So I drove all the way back to the pharmacy at HRRH they have two different kinds. I bought the raspberry flavoured chews. Those are good but I was only having 3 / day. On my one month follow up I learned that I should be having 6 per day! So I ended up buying the MASSIVE jar of "wild cherry" flavour calcium that will last me 3 months. They are still not good but I think I can manage to choke them down. At least those are only 3 per day.
My friend gave me her centrum silver chewable vitamins; those were terrible too and I absolutely couldn't choke those down. So I bought gummy multivitamins. "Oh NO you can't take gummies" well where the hell did it say that?! OK fine, I need to find new multivits. I bought the walmart brand of chewable centrum silver but they make me feel sooo sick :( I am now taking a cut up tablet of women's one a day multivit but I don't think that's enough.
I have spent SOOOO much money on the wrong vitamins and I'm still not getting everything I need. I'm very very disappointed in the after care at HRRH. And you can't ask anyone anything because you get such vague answers.
I wish you well, and hope that you have more luck with your vitamins than I have.
