Blood work and elevated WBC
Hello, I completed my required blood work on Friday and was asked to come into my family doctor's office immediately to discuss the results. He pointed out that my White Blood Cell count is elevated (14.1, normal range is 4.0-11.0) and my absolute neutros is elevated (9.5, normal range is 1.6-7.5). He asked if I was sick at all and I haven't been. No illness or injury. Then he scared me and mentioned leukemia. I was shocked! How could this even be a possibility? I have no symptoms and feel great. Why would he mention this I wondered. He said not to panic yet and we're re-doing my blood work next week to see if the counts gone down. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this (themselves or know someone else who has) and what the outcome was? I told my boss and she looked scared because she said her dad went for routine blood work and that's how they found his leukemia. She told me to check my neck for swollen lymph nodes and mine are quite swollen, especially on the left side! The doctor didn't check this at all. What else can influence this elevation? I'm trying not to panic or read too much on the internet. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?
Thanks for listening and any advice or experience you can share
Nikki

I don't have any advice or experience to offer, Nikki, but I wanted to let you know that I will be thinking of you. Fingers crossed that it was a weird false-positive. You know you have all sorts of support from the gang on this forum.

I'm sorry for your stress. I'm not going to tell you not to freak out because I would totally freak out too.....however....I WILL tell you that there has been a "bug" going around for the last 3 weeks and it seems like EVERYONE I know has gotten it. It's gone through my daughter's school and is now hitting all the teachers & parents. For some it has been very mild and for others it has kicked their butt. It is VERY possible that you have caught a bug...either a mild one, or just the beginning of one that has yet to show symptoms. This could easily cause raised WBC and swollen lymph nodes. Your body fighting off ANY infection would cause both those symptoms and there are plenty of infections etc that a person can have that may not cause symptoms....UTI etc for example. Try to breath....try to focus on it being a bug.....talk yourself down off the ledge in your head. Have you been around any children or people with colds or flu in the last 3-4 weeks?
I hope you get good news, and fast. Please let us know how it works out for you
You're too sweet! Thank you! I'm trying to stay busy and not overthink it. I am going on monday to get re-tested, I'll let you know once I hear back. I have teenagers and they always have friends over so it's certainly possible, also people at work have been sick so I could be fighting something. Thanks again for your kind words and support :)

I hate to say it but that makes me feel a bit better. I know how you must have felt because I definitely panicked even though I'm trying not to. It's scary, I still have children to raise. I won't overthink this and will hope for the same outcome as you :)
Thanks for sharing your experience
