Hi,

Out of curiosity can the veterans please let me know how many of you gained weight post 18 months or so?  If you did how much did you gain.

I am pretty small now but still want to get to 248 to technically have a BMI that is in the normal range.  I plan now join a gym and start a more intense training but am trying to understand the final weight gain to determine how skinny I need to get now to ensure i remain normal BMI after....

All input is appreciated and I know it differs for everyone but just trying to see if there is a concensus in the final weight gain #.

Thanks everyone,

Kelly

Do you mean 148? :-)

I am four years out. Lowest, right after my panniculectomy was 126, and now I sit between 131-136 (which i'm probably at right now, post race). High normal BMI for me. There is a general bounceback of around 10 pounds by year three (and some more).

However, the scale was 131 at my gym weigh in two weeks ago, but my body fat was 19%. My body fat at my lowest weight was 24% It's not always a number on the scale that is the best judge.

Hope that helps!

Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!

My lowest of 140 was after an illness not wls related. I now hover around 150-153. I am comfortable at this weight 3 years out but am very careful not to gain anymore

I'm almost 4 years out.  My lowest so far was 202, but I was extremely stressed and not eating at the time.  I now hover between 205 & 210.  I'm hoping with summer I'll be more active and get a little lower.

I have a friend who is 6 years out, and I don't think he's regained at all.  And the opposite, I have a friend who is 6 years out and regained a lot from what I've heard (not in the same building any more to see).  But all this is based on how you use the tool.  2 of us used it well, to moderately well, and one not so well.

I started at 273 pounds and my lowest was 162 pounds. I am now around 194 pounds and am very happy at this weight.

I would stress that a normal BMI is not a true reflection of your success. Be very careful because if you never get to a normal BMI you may never feel successful. Success is not in the number, it's based on how you feel.

Yes, I agree.  Thk you for the feedback.  I think BMI is a trap too - so many things come into play, such as age, etc.

Good question & answers!  BMI - i recall joining a gym about 1995, and they told me my BMI of 22 was high for someone 5'9".  :/  Just added to my stress and continual roller coaster of trying to lose weight.  I'm pre-op still and I am aiming for the goal, like many of you said - of being happy.  I think I'd be pretty thrilled to not shop in a plus-size store anymore - wear what I like, not what fits.

Hi, I too am still pre-op, but i've been doing alot of research on the stats with WLS (from medical journals) and most of it says that at 5-10 years post-op, you can expect (on average) to be down around 60 - 70 % of your 'excess' weight.  So if you were carrying 100 extra pounds, expect to settle around 30 - 40 extra pounds still.  Keep in mind though that this is clinical research and doesn't necessarily reflect real life.  But then again, website forums might also have a higher propensity of successful people as well and may not necessarily reflect general populations.  I wish you all the best in beating these 'average' numbers!
