Thunder Bay finally has a support group!! Our first meeting is Thursday, March 26th.  If you are interested, please contact Mandy at [email protected] for more information.  I do have a question for those who have started or are part of a support group....do I need to have members sign any type of waiver? Has anyone ever heard of this before? Thanks

The group I run is very informal and social, no need for a waiver of any sort. Why would you need a waiver (what would it cover is what I mean)?

My insurance agent suggested it claiming that if I was "running" the group and I gave out a recipe or something and someone took it, used it, gained a bunch of weight back then they could sue me. It's crazy to even think about it so I just thought I would ask around. I don't think I'm going to get a waiver. I'll take my chances

Hmm.. I can see your agent's point IF I were professing myself to be a paid "expert" providing a for-a-fee-service. Running a support group, whether very informal or even more structured, is really simply a coming together of like-minded, similar-goal-oriented group of people who wish to share their experiences and struggles. As the leader, you are not providing them with a prescribed "diet plan" or "nutritional advice", just a group of people sharing with each other. I was thinking maybe you were referring to a confidentiality waiver, which actually isn't a terrible idea, not for litigious reasons but for the feeling of "safety" amongst group members. I think it really depends on the direction you wish to take with the group or more importantly, what people are comfortable with. Keep us posted on your group! :)

I've been to many support groups and never signed any type of waiver... good luck with your group!!
