Calcium question

I've been taking Citracal tablets for the last few months (it was OKed by a NP) and was running low so today I picked up the Citracal gummies figuring it was the exact same thing.

Once back at the office, I compared the two bottles and the tablets have "Calcium (as calcium citrate)" and the gummies have "Calcium (tricalcium phosphate)".

Are the gummies acceptable, or is the phosphate a bad thing after RNY surgery?

I'd say the gummies are a no-go. It's very important to get calcium citrate for maximum absorption. I'd kill to get a chewable calcium citrate but just haven't seen them.

I believe we only absorb the citrate. So the rest will not help you, leaving you with little calcium.

That's what I figured.  Damn it.  I figured the CITRI part of Citrical would automatically mean citrate.  Fooled me!

Okay, back to Wal-Mart it goes and I stick with the tablets.

Thanks everyone. :)

TES there is a Life Brand liquid calcium citrate available at Shopper's Drug Mart.  It's Blueberry flavoured and not as bad as I though it was going to be.  1 tablespoon is 1,000 mgs of calcium citrate with some Vitamin D3.  It's very reasonably priced.  I have been taking 1/2 a tablespoon 3 times per day.  I went to my one month follow up at TWH on March 4th and was told that gummies are no good and are not recommended.
