16 Months Post....Back In Surgery I Go!

Well I naively thought I would not have any complications....boy was I wrong!

I had my surgery Nov. 2013 and found out just 2 months later that I was pregnant! Had my baby boy in September and sailed through the whole thing! He was a nice weight and had ZERO complications. I have never once in my entire experience not tolerated anything, thrown up, had duping syndrome....sooo lucky and honestly would never even know I had surgery.

Well, that has changed. I ended up in the ER on Saturday night with terrible abdominal pains and everytime I tried to eat or drink anything it would cramp so bad.  I noticed a change a few weeks back....I would go to bed feeling great and then wake up 3 hours later, bolt out of bed and throw up! Went back to sleep and a half hour later....same thing.  But I still felt fine the next day....very odd.

Anyhow, after a 17 hour wait in the ER they basically handed me my CT Scan results and said "Here take this to TWH as we cannot deal with this here!!" Now, my hospital is in a fairly big city (Burlington). This floored me, but seeing as I have 4 little ones at home....including a breastfed infant, I could not just pickup and drive to Toronto.

So I came home and have been managing the pain while I wait to see Dr.Jackson on an urgent appointmet this week.

It appears that I have an umbilical hernia with several loops of intestines stuck in it....but they still have blood flow, so yes it is painful, but not life threatening at this point. I also have another hernia in my upper left quadrant where my actual pouch is stuck through the muscle....again no loss of blood flow, YET, so I wait in pain.

At any point this could take a turn for the worse, but because I am stable at the moment, I just have to ride it out and see Dr.Jackson. Please pray the wait is not too long.  They also found several masses on both kidneys...I have NO clue what this means and will see if they can be dealt with during the same surgery.

What a mess...so, YES, complications can still happen at any point. I can't wait to be pain free again, this sucks!  And also, trust your instincts...my gut was telling me to just suck it up and drive to Toronto Saturday night, but instead I went to my local hospital....what a joke they were. :(

Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us. It is important for us to not be so complacent about our new tummy. I am also sorry that you have to be going through all of this. Hopefully your appointment with Dr. Jackson won't be too long. Having your pouch sticking through the muscle wall seems like it would be urgent. Take good care and update us when you can.

Take care,

Tara

I'm sorry to hear that something has come up now but thankful they know what it is...and it's good you were able to get in to see Dr. Jackson this week. Fingers crossed for you that he deals with it asap and get you back to feeling healthy. And praying those kidneys are okay. Sending some positive energy your way.

Tammy :)

I had an internal hernia at two years out. My bowel got stuck and they did emergency surgery within 10 hours or so. If there's any change -- increased pain, etc, get yourself to your centre's emergency room ASAP!  Can be life or death. As for the masses on the kidneys, might be nothing. I'm told it's quite common. The saw something like that on the images of one of my kidneys pre-bypass. Family doctor said they would keep an eye on it from time to time, but very common!

good luck!  And take care!

DD
