What do you tell people when they ask you about your weight loss?
I tell anyone and everyone that asks. I want people to be educated about gastric bypass.
I tell people I had surgery. If they have a problem with that, I educate them on why I had it, and why, almost four years later, I have worked my tool my keeping compliant with the guidelines given to me by my centre. If they still have a problem with that, then I tell them thanks for their opinion, but it was a great choice for me!
Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!
Congrats on your wl!
Like many who've posted - I'm also pre-op. I've only told a handful of people, including a few at my work. I am going forward with the thought that I will be open about it. There were two other staff here that had the surgery, yet never admitted it to the majority of our co-workers. Totally their prerogative - yet it sure did keep that rumour mill working. I have no shame in what I am doing to help my health. Sure, it may seem drastic to many. I'd rather be open to what is assisting me to achieve my goals. If people can't handle that - the issue is theirs, not mine :)

I keep a blog... you're welcome to read it anytime :) https://heretoeaternity.wordpress.com/
I'm pretty open about it. I haven't had too many people come right out and ask, but the few who have, I was honest with. I spent my life being ashamed of myself and I'll be damned if I'm going to be ashamed of having this surgery in order to better myself and my health. If I can do a little to take the stigma away from it, I will. Everyone I've told has (to my face anyway) been pretty cool about. Most people ask questions about it and are surprised at how much work is still needed after surgery.
I'm pretty comfortable talking to people about it, but that's just me. :)

I think your responses are perfectly normal, especially in a place where you don't want everyone to know "your business".
I am presently 6 years post-op and maintaining a 104lb weight loss, there re still people that haven't seen me for many years and even friends of friends while dining out have asked "why don't you eat the bun"...whether it be on a hamburger or at an Olive Garden, some people I tell that I have had the surgery and I am not filling up my pouch on a bun...and other people I just say that I choose not to consume much bread, rice, sweets etc.
It's ALL about what YOU feel comfortable revealing or NOT revealing
you can always simply state "I have made a choice to live a healthier lifestyle."
prior to surgery 323lbs....4 years post-op maintaining between 108- 114 lb loss.
life is AMAZING when you continue on the right path~!. Use your surgeons gift to the fullest~!
