meat weighed b4 or after cooking?

I never which is best to weigh meat...  4 or after cooking?  Tks!

I am 6 yrs post-op and have never weighed a piece of meat, we were told that if it's bigger than a deck of cards it's too much, and that's what I have always gone by.
