1 week post-op, how fast back to work?

I'm one week post-op and I'm so tired and weak. I can't imagine how someone could be back at work after a week.

I saw the surgeon today and he said Everything looks good. The receptionist told me that a lot of the recovery time depends on how you react to the anaesthesia.

I was hoping to be back at work next week, but I don't see that happening.  I have no energy, but I'm getting in my protein and vitamins, but I need a nap every day. I can't imagine getting it all together in the next few days.

Any advice?

I don't have any advice.  I'm still waiting but am interested in others responses cuz I'm hoping two weeks is enough for me. (Office job).

Hi Pamela

I am 2 week post op. Had my surgery on Jan 27th and joined work yesterday. You are still in one week - believe me when I say this - after one week it does get easier . I find every day is better than previous day.  I do feel lack of energy but it is getting better as well . There is time when I feel nothing has changed at all ( in a good sense). So hang in there darling and very soon you will feel awesome! I am actually glad to be to work as i feel I am getting back to my normal routine . At the same time don't push  yourself . Listen to your body and it will tell you when you are ready to go back to work

Thanks, how are you finding planning your food? Right now it takes me most of the day to eat and then I need a nap! I don't think I would get much work done in between.

some people just bounce back quicker than others as well.. I could have easily gone back to work to my desk job within 2 weeks. went back after 5 days with my gall bladder (4 yrs ago)... and one week after my vaginal hysterectomy (one year ago)

Let your body answer it!

For first two weeks - I had one tablespoon of oatmeal and 1/4 skim milk for breakfast and one protein shake all day along- I used to divide it in four sections. My dinner uses to be creamy soups, yogurt or cortège cheese - only 1/4 cup or less . I was sipping water through out the day. I just started my puréed diet today . The difficulty I am having is - taking vitamins in time . I am able to take only 2 calcium vitamins a day instead of 3. I just need to remind myself. Take is easy . Each person is different and recovery is different so do listen to your body! But I can tell you in no time you will be feeling so much better

I took and needed 5 weeks.  I work in an office but long days.  Good luck!

I went back after eight days, and even though I work from home,  I regret that. It was not enough time. All I wanted to do was take naps, all day. If I could redo that, I'd have taken a minimum three weeks.

I took 2 weeks off and was good to go after that. Like Dolly said, things really do start to turn around after the 1 week mark and you will very likely be feeling quite a lot better in the next few days. In hindsight, I should have taken an additional week just to get my eating a little more down pat. I do not recommend going back with how you are feeling right now at all. If you have the time to take, take it!

At three weeks out I could have gone back to work.  But I used the 3rd week to rest up and practice new eating habits.  For sure I could not have gone back to work the first two weeks and I work from home!  My head just would not have been in the game.  I wanted to concentrate on me, I tired more easily and I needed the rest.

Take your time and pamper yourself.  Naps, sip water and protein drinks.  That's all you should have to worry about right now.   Good luck!
