Worst Day ever!!!

Yes, it is reasonable to assume that most of us do not have the best eating habits. I would assume, as part of the Nutritionist's job, it would be up to her/him to determine if a surgical candidate had shown sufficient understanding of the necessary changes and demonstrated what she/he would deem an acceptable amount of change and learning to be able to move on to surgery without further intervention, or if they felt that additional nutritional counseling/consultation was necessary before proceeding. I am also assuming that the appointment in question was a one-on-one appointment, not a group learning/teaching meeting.

I completely agree with you. If we could establish perfectly healthy eating patterns before WLS, we wouldn't need WLS.  It's absolutely ridiculous that this person should have their surgery delayed because they ate three bagels in one week while they're pre-op.

I'm so glad I went through TWH where they don't pull this crap on their patients.

They most certainly do "pull this crap" at TWH when it is deemed necessary, as I know several people who have had to go back for additional appointments. Do you suppose that 3 bagels may not have been the only issue perhaps?

I am assuming that things are as she described them in her opening post - that she did fine with all the other specialists, that she has implemented good changes in her eating patterns already, and that she was told they are delaying her because she ate a few bagels.

I've seen enough horror stories about centers like Guelph and some of the dietitians at other places that I don't necessarily assume someone is leaving stuff out. All I have to go by is what she has said here, and her post was pretty detailed. So I'm taking her at her word.

I'm not sure what horror stories you heard about Guelph. I found everyone to be extremely focused on my best interests, honest and tough.  Exactly what I need.  In my case, it was the social worker who insisted on some extra work, which I did and I found to be very helpful.  Racing to surgery will not help most of us.  Taking meaningful and thoughtful steps towards a goal is what we should be doing.  I trust that these professionals have learned a thing or two from the hundreds of patients they have seen.  They want us to succeed. Checking boxes and advancing us towards an imaginary finish line will not help us succeed.

Sorry you had such a bad day. I know how disappointing it is to have to have "another" appointment but after this surgery is all said and done... this delay will seem insignificant. I know this because I have been there too as many of us have. Eating post op when everything goes down just a little too well can be a road back to where we all came from. So listen to her concerns and I am not implying that you have to eat perfectly but learn how you are supposed to eat. I know I was questioned intensely by the nut about the proper way to eat and how to pair foods and what not eat etc. Perhaps you didn't have the answers she was looking for and thats ok but you will need to know to be successful. Be super prepared for your next visit and I'm sure you will do fine.

She picked one bad thing out of all the changes I have made.  No pop, no deep fried french fries, onion rings.  I am scheduling my meals for the week.  Because that stupid My Fitness Pal prints all the snacks together she thought I was eating them all at once.  I was below the daily calories listed on My Fitness Pal every day.  I go to Curves 4 times a week, I play soccer twice a week and volleyball once a week.  I now sit at the kitchen table with the family (ps this has been the most rewarding part so far) to eat meals, no TV no phones no more ice cream or cookies (don't even miss them).  If I was perfect in the last 6 years that i tried to loose weight instead of having a gastric by-pass which I was approved for in 2008 before this stupid registry I would have been done it.  But six years later I am still the same weight loss 25 put it back on loose 25 put it back on.   Yes it is only 6 more weeks and not years but...bottom line it is a crappy reason and nothing else.

You have made some incredibly positive (and hard) changes - good for you. I do know what you're saying about myfitnesspal and you're right, it DOES list all the snacks together in one big food-fest. You may have to create your own menu form (I know, it's extra work and it sucks) that separates things out more appropriately, to bring and show the Nutritionist the next time you go, so there's no confusion.

I know it feels crappy now, but as someone recently on the other side of the surgery date, that nutritionist might just have given you the best hope you can have for lifetime recovery by not turning her back and rubber stamping you because it would be easier on her.  I got a pass and now go to the boards regularly just to make sure I am covering the bases.  I wish you the very best on your journey and sincerely hope that you can look back on this stumble as a gift.  I know not at the moment, but someday
