An accident that not only killed a man, but ruined my day and prolonged this journey.

Today I was headed to TWH, for my Nurse Practitioner appointment. I was so excited!!! Toronto is normally about a 35 minute drive, on a good day for us. We left 3 hours early, just cause of the snow and how early my appointment was. As soon as we got onto the 401, we see cars, massive amounts of cars. I was like WTF!! So I turned it to the Oshawa station to see what was going on. Apparently @ 10 pm the night before, a man decided to drink and drive. He was in a Jeep Rangler.  He swerved into a transport truck! The transport truck the slammed into the guardrail and flipped on it side. The trucker died instantly, and the drunk driver remained alive. We had to get off the 401, and find an alternative rout. By 7am we had made it only to Brock st Whitby, and that's about 5 km from my home. We gave up. By the time we would have gotten to TWH, it would have been 11am.. way too late for my appointment which was @ 830am. As soon as the clinic opened, I called and explained everything. The lady on the phone was extremely understanding. I didn't cause this! She then proceeded to tell me that the next available date for the NP wasn't until the middle of June. I'm so heartbroken and pissed. Not only did that drunk driver kill a man, but he has caused me, my life to be basically left in the ditch for the time being. Not only has this extremely stupid man, that decided to drink and drive killed a man, decided to ruin a lot of other innocent peoples lives. I don't deserve this!

First of all, that is terrible. I despise any who choose to drive under the influence!!! And to see an innocent person lose their life over it is disgusting, and very sad.

As for your date, don't fret. My initial dates given to me after orientation were months and months out, luckily there are ALWAYS cancelations and it is very easy to snap one up. I understand the frustration, but think positive. I think I shortened my appointment dates by calling and inquiring for cancels by six months. Yes, I live about 5 minutes from TWH, and have a flexible schedule, so it may be a bit more difficult for you, but stay positive. You will likely be able to get an earlier date.

good morning... what a harrowing day!  If it makes you feel any better, I've been in the same situation.  The group Nutrition appointment keeps eluding me.  First time I was stuck for 1.5 hours on the Gardiner - and like you said the lady on the phone was SO understanding.  Rescheduled to this week.  Then snow happened.  So I'm rescheduled for April, but will call in to find a cancellation.  The staff at TWH are really great with helping out.  Hang in there.  Just glad you're safe.

Please don't take this the wrong way, as a pre-op I share your frustration with just wanting things to move quickly, but in this horrific situation, a family lost a husband and father.

The big picture, I'd take the inconvenience.

Try contacting the clinic regularly for cancellations.  Hopefully your journey won't be delayed too much.

Take care.

I would be upset too.  I understand that someone was killed and that is horrific but doesn't relate to your situation or your feelings which are separate.

Keep calling for cancellations and you will probably get in sooner. If you do, can you message me because I am also trying to get in sooner :)

I am very sorry and I hate to sound rude here...but you could have taken an alternative route. I had my 1 year check up yesterday at Humber, we left Port Hope at 5:50 am for an 8am appt. We heard about the accident just as we were leaving town and we planned on taking Taunton Road and then getting on the 407. I called Humber at 730 and left a voice mail letting them know I would be late as we were only in Whitby at the time. They called me back at 8am letting me know that it was fine and not to worry. I finally got to my appt at 8:35.

I'm so sad for family of the truck driver...such a sad situation but I wasn't letting that piece of CHIT drunk driver ruin my appts.  I worked to hard over the last year to reschedule.
