Hi all, my question is my brother in law is very obese and just had his second heart attack. I am trying to talk to him about having the surgery. He was told that he has to wait a year from his last heart attack. Could he not start the referral and appointments? From what I have seen it takes about a year from start to finish. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Stephanie

I would give it a try. Speak to your doctor, they would know best. But yes, it generally takes a year, although some do get through quicker, and some take more time. I was about 7 months from referral to surgery.

Definitely see if his doctor is willing to refer him, but ONLY if your brother-in-law is 100% on board. If he gets the surgery and isn't committed, he won't comply with the eating guidelines and could get even sicker. Good wishes to you guys.

Good response from Roma. It really does have to be his decision. If there are support groups in your area have him go to meet people wwho have been through this.
