Moving surgery date...

I have a dilemma...  My surgery date is August 31st.

I told my HR department yesterday and I got the biggest sigh and eye roll of all time. As I was leaving the office I heard her call the head manager of the company.

My work basically makes all their money from September and October "product".  I work for a small company. I missed September last year because of mat leave, I also missed the September and October of the year before because of a mat leave. So missing another September/October may cost me my job if I do anything wrong between now and then.  I'm not over reacting, this is fact.  They "reserve the right to let anyone go at any time for any reason" right in my contract that I signed 4 years ago.

Anyway, in another thread (of mine) someone said that switching surgeons may be an option to move things up. I'm also considering moving my date to October.

I called my surgeon's office and the woman said that it's possible to be moved up, but they can't make guarantees (of course).  She said my options are...  Move my date to the end of October now, and maybe I'll get an earlier date. Stay with my current date and hope a leave of absence for 7-10 days isn't as big of a deal as I feel it is to them.  Call my centre and see if I can "shop around" for an earlier date with a different surgeon.

I don't know what to do. I suppose one option is keep my August date, if I don't hear anything by the end of June call and reschedule (which would then probably be around Xmas or early 2016).

What at would you do?

Im at a loss. I thought for sure my surgery would be the end of June, or early July and I would just go back to work after a 3ish weeks.

If I were in your shoes, I'd choose surgery dates for later, like October or November.

I wouldn't jeopardize my employment for surgery. But that depends on your personal cir****tances, of course. For me, waiting for surgery wasn't an issue (I had no co-morbidities) and given that I work for the federal government, I definitely wanted to retain my position. So I moved my surgery date ahead from what the clinic wanted because I knew it worked for me and my employer.

Just my opinion of course. YMMV. Unless it's an urgent need, I would sit tight and wait until timing is good for everyone.

Don't jeopardize your job. If that is an important to be at work, then you can move your surgery to a later date. I started a new job around the time I started my process, and I deferred my appointments by 3 months so that I could get up and running in my new role. I know it feels far off but waiting another month or two will not be that bad, especially if it means keeping your job. You will likely need more time off than 7-10 days.

I took 8 days off, it was NOT enough. And I work from home. All I wanted to do was sleep. I did have to travel for work shortly after surgery, so that did not help. I'm just saying, if I could take it back, I would have definitely taken 3 weeks at a minimum. Anything more than that, I think I'd go crazy of boredom. Good luck.

I kinda think differently than the others. August is still quite far away and maybe there is a chance you can get on a waiting list for an earlier appointment. Ride it out a little closer to the summer and then decide whether you want to reschedule or not. If you have to make that decision now according to your center then that is different.  Either way, I wish you all the best. P.S. they are right about needing more time than 10 days to recover.

How much time are you planning on taking?  What physical level would you say your job is?  I had surgery on January 30,2015 and I just went back to work.  I'm in no pain but when I had to walk to the bank I did get a little winded and had to rest a little.  Now I only took a week off.  Just something to think about.  I hate for you to move your already late surgery to an even later date.  I am a bookkeeper so I am in front of a computer most of my day.

I have a "desk job"...  I'm a radio announcer. So I just have to fake happy for about 50 minutes a day, or sit at my desk and type. Pretty darn simple. I really only want to take two weeks max if possible.  Seeing others go back early lets me know it can be done.  So maybe I can just take one week off and make this date work!  That would be nice. I don't want to pu**** if I don't have to.

I get wiped out when I am walking for a block or two or standing for a long periods.  I am sure you will do fine.

Although we are going through a life saving process, we do still need jobs.  If this is putting your job at risk I would recommend a later surgery date.  I had to move my surgery date around so much.  I originally had a Sep. / 14 date, then moved it b/c my youngest was just starting school.  I got my date in Nov. / 14 then my brother announced his wedding in another country.  Move again.  Now my date is settled on March 10.  It all seemed so far away when going through the process but let me tell you, it goes so quickly!

At my work there is NEVER a good time to be off.  We're so busy.  And I am intending to be off for 6 weeks.  I have no idea how I will react to this surgery and I want to ensure I have figured out how and what to eat, and ensure I'm keeping everything down before I go back to work.

It sucks to think you have to move your date farther away but after all this we still need to work and IMO I wouldn't jeopardize that.
