How do I get a VSG (OHIP) in ontario?
Hello, I posted this in the VSG forum and got a lot of responses from US members which I appreciated but I'm looking more specifically for info in ontario. Im researching WLS and have decided on VSG for many reasons (restrictive without malabsorption, ability to take NSAIDS, not changing my digestive track, less risk of dumping, recovery time, etc) but I'm worried about how I can get a surgeon to support it. I have an appt with my family doctor next week and I will be requesting a referral then. Are there any tips I should know, being at this point in my journey? I've been researching for about 2 years and first considered the band but now decided with VSG. I think I will be going to the Humber river regional hospital as it's closest to me. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated! I'm 5'2" about 265lbs (BMI 48) age 36 with no known comorbidities at present. Im sure OHIP would cover RNY but I really prefer VSG. Thanks for your time and any info!!
OHIP does cover VSG. From what I've read it's up to the surgeon but you have a voice as well. I'm far from knowing much else about it as my Orientation isn't till Monday but from what I've heard they will tell you all about RNY and you really don't get to plead your case for VSG till you see the surgeon. I've been hearing it's easier and easier to get it done these days though. I'll let you know how it goes for me. Good Luck!
Good luck on Monday!! Any info would be appreciated! I'm going to PM you if you don't mind regarding questions about the process so far :)
thanks!
I am in the same boat as you. I would prefer VSG for many reasons as well and I figure that I will discuss it with the doctors when I get to that point. OHIP does cover it if the doctors are willing to do it. I don't know much else than that or how you can go about trying to convince them. If I get any more information I will let you know.
