Kidney Stones - Pre-Op. VSG or RNY?
Hello. Does anyone know if having kidney stones before bariatric surgery impacts whether the surgeon will decide that you have the Roux En-Y or vertical sleeve gastrectomy?
I currently have two kidney stones (one in each kidney) and my GP doesn't plan on doing anything about them. I didn't even know I had them until I had an ultrasound done for something unrelated.
While going through the process I ended up having kidney stones and 2 subsequent surgeries to remove them as they created a blockage. My wls surgeon didn't worry about them, and I had an RNY. However, with that being said, I did speak with my kidney specialist about wls and he actually said that surgery would likely help me. It turned out I passed a stone right after my surgery, which was not fun, but since then have been (touch wood) stone free.
One other thing...Toradol which is an nsaid, and which we cannot take with the RNY is often used to treat pain...my kidney specialist said that while they use that medicine short term to treat pain, it is hard on the kidneys/stones in the longterm.
I don't think having the stones will impact the type of surgery they do, but that is just my opinion. Hopefully you will pass them before and not have to worry about them.
Good luck in your journey.

Thanks NewMe2.0, that's encouraging to hear. I really like what I read about the bypass surgery results long term but then I worry about meds I need to take and my kidney stones. They don't bother me now but I wonder as you said if after the surgery they will cause problems. Something I'll be sure to bring up at my surgeon consult meeting.
All the best.
