Dr's Note

When did you receive your dr's note for time off? The surgeon did not give me one, my dr's office says that he can't give me one without seeing me, and his first avail appointment is mid Sept (don't get me started on that lol).

this is the first time I have ever had surgery, or taken time off work that wasn't vacation or maternity leave so advice is invited.

I will be applying for EI, how has that worked for others?

I did not get a note per se, but I had specific forms that had to be filled out for my insurance company (Manulife) so I could get my STD benefits. I did not go through EI so I can't comment there. I asked my surgeon to fill them out when I was in the hospital and he sent me home with the completed forms. You could also take them to your 1 month follow up. Call your surgeons office and ask if they can have that available for you when you go. I'm sure it would be fine if either your surgeon or your GP could write you a note.

When my I received the call booking my surgery (Ottawa), the individual emailed me a doctors note the same day.

I didn't take EI, and Ottawa e-mailed me a note as well.  I'd contact EI now, and see what their process is.  They'll be able to tell you what you need to do, and when to do it.  I'm not sure if they need forms or a Dr. note.

I was given mine the same day I got my surgery date. I went through Humber.

I used vacation time so as to not need to share any information at all, and I got full pay.

Ok, I got the note from the clinic at TWH.  I wish I had vacation time, I only have 1 week left as I took a week earlier this summer to spend with my kids. 

My 7 weeks off was without pay. I feel for you.  I literally started my brand new job 9 days before my surgery. I was offered the position the same day I got my surgery date lol. I was 18 days from surgery date given to having surgery. 

I was very lucky as the employer was very accommodating in giving me the time off. I didn't tell them that I was having an RNY though. That wasn't their business.
