Hello Judy! Congratulations on your decision to better your health.  I had my referral sent about a month and half ago, start of June. Was called end of June for my Orientation Date of Sept 03/14. This is for Sudbury Health Sciences. The receptionist at the Bariatric Clinic there had said that I would have had an appointment sooner, however there were fewer Orientation Sessions through the summer. I think three months from referral to orientation is actually quite impressive.

Today I had purchased two boxes of Premier Protein Bars from Costco! I love them with a cup of coffee in the morning for breakfast and or half of one with coffee in the evening. Helps with cravings and stabilizes blood sugar levels. I have had plently of times in the past eating energy bars and loosing the pounds, but they always had come back! This time, RNY will step in. I know I will be successful. I am slowly phasing in the energy bars into my diet....

Although, I will have to cut the coffee a week or so before surgery, OYI.

I would recommend giving yourself more then a week for the coffee. I would start now. When I went for my orientation back in November I started the next day. Surgery was in February. I just started by cutting bac****il I was down to 2 a day...which took me about 2 weeks then right to decaf all together. The last thing I wanted was to go through the withdrawals and be on opti at the same time as I wasn't sure how I would do with the shakes. I've heard alot get headaches etc. I ended up being fine with them. I haven't drank regular tea or coffee since and honestly I don't miss the regular stuff now.

Good luck to both of you!

Hello Kim! You are right, I think I have been in denial about the coffee issue. I should start now... I have to start now. Coffee was my last refuge. Sweetner n non-dairy creamer. Unhhhh @ Instant crap.

I just wanted to give my $0.02 on protein bars. I am not a fan and they have never been part of my diet since surgery 8.5 years and 170 pounds ago. Sure, I've tried a couple, but the nutritional values on them just don't compare to a good quality protein shake.

If you compare the stats on Premier Protein products (which I consider to be an excellent product), you'll see a huge difference in calories, carbohydrates, fats, sugars, just to name a few:

Premier chocolate shake: 160 calories, 30g protein, 3g fat, 5g carbs, 1g sugar Premier chocolate shake

Premier Chocolate Crunch bar: 280 calories, 30g protein, 6g fat, 26g carbs, 10g sugar Premier Chocolate Crunch bar

Yes, some of them are palatable or even quite yummy, but that's a LOT of calories and carbs for a "chocolate bar" (sorry, that's how my mind equates them - slippery slope for me). I could have a real chocolate bar (not that I would, just to make a point) for less calories and carbs than one of those Premier protein bars.

Just sayin'. Food for thought, so to speak.

K.

Your RIGHT Karen. LOL Look at that 10 GRAMS of Sugar. UNnnnhhhhhhh... I didn't even complete step ONE at reading the nutrition labels. I just thought since it was premier protein, that it was the same prod that was recommended for us. If I don`t open the boxes do you think Costco will return them??

And they are yummy. They do help with cravings and protein levels. But there is NO excuse for me to have that amount of Sugar, when you are right, I can get the SAME amount of great protein in a shake.

I will take a picture of them on the return desk at Costco! Along with me buying a jar of maxwell non-caffinated crystals.

This post was depressing, but needed to be heard! Thank you for NOT Sugar Coating ;0) I want to be one successful.

Awwww..... I feel sad for bursting your happy-bubble. Sorry! LOL

YES, Costco will take unopened cases back for sure. They may give you a "store credit card thing", but I can always find a way to spend $$ at Costco anyway. :)

Edited to add:

Your reaction reminded me of a funny conversation I had a few years back with a woman at work who considered herself a real nutrition-guru. She was going on (and on) to me about how good her cous cous salad was, how nutritious is was, etc etc.... when I said, "Jane, you do realize that cous cous is pasta, right?"

Complete silence. Sad face of disbelief. Followed by, "Karen, you know when you hear something and you wish with everything in you that you could UNhear it so it wouldn't be true?"

Hi Judy,

Welcome to the board.  I wish you much luck on your journey, but be aware it won't happen quick.  The average time for most places is about 18 months.  While this seems to be a long time, it will go past quick, and you'll be able to make sure that you are well prepared for the changes that you will be making. Use your time wisely and to learn everything you can for your date.

Cathy
