sleeve vs RNY
Hi guys, this may have been discussed somewhere but I am curious why some get the sleeve and some get RNY? I have read about both procedures, but wondering how the doctors decide which is best for you. I guess from the appointments with their team, they decide? Does the patient request one or the other? I see on this board that there is a good mix of both procedures. I know RNY is the most common method now a days. Thanks!
RNY is the provincial standard (and OHIP approved) for Bariatric Surgery. You can ask for a sleeve, but if you do not have a medical reason, it may not be granted. The surgeon has to ask to get the sleeve approved. Medical reasons include needing to take medications that would not be absorbed well enough with the RNY, or needing to take NSAIDs for medical conditions.

Where did you have your surgery? I have just been referred, I have a long road ahead of me and lots of time to research even more than I already have, but the dumping just sounds so awful to me, it scares me a bit. To never ever have sugar again.....lol that is what I am trying to wrap my head around!
I went to Humber, asked for the sleeve & Dr Hagen said that I did not meet criteria so it would be a RNY if I wanted anything. I don't miss the sugar. I'm 5 months out & down 83 lbs

Not all RNY patients experience dumping syndrome (it's estimated at about 30% I believe). I've dumped 2x in 8.5 years - once from a little too much mayo in my egg at about 4 weeks out and once from vegetable juice that shocked me with 28g of sugar at about 6 months out. It was extremely easy to avoid - I did not eat any refined sugar (NONE****il around June of last year (so 7.5 years without) when I was advised to cut the chemicals as much as possible out of my diet and put on 20 pounds (I was very ill, that's a whole 'nother story). Now, if I have a small piece of muffin or banana bread or even a cookie, I don't panic about it, but still don't ADD any sugar to my diet - do not and have not missed it one bit. :)
With respect to RNY and VSG - they're both effective surgeries. VSG wasn't an option for me 8.5 years ago but given the choice (of what's best for me, personally) I would have still gotten the RNY for the malabsorption - after so many years yoyo dieting my metabolism was screwed. RNY gave my body the re-set it needed.
You have excellent abilities to lose with either - it's really up to you, your body's needs and what your surgeon is willing to do.

I have been wanting RNY since I saw it on Oprah like 20 years ago. I am glad I got it done.I had my surgery in October and I am down 100 pounds and I feel really good.I was determined to have the bypass.
There have been numerous people who have had the sleeve and do really well.Losing a lot of weight and maintaining looking and feeling wonderful.
