Yes they say 18 months post op to conceive but I've noticed a ton of ladies are very soon after WLS because they become more fertile. I was just wondering how it would affect them so soon after.

being a single 42 yr old who developed a very heavy menstrual cycle post op I had a hysterectomy done to prevent pregnancy since I have been with the same guy for 7 months now! best decision ever :) especially since my children are 19 and 22! I do NOT want more kids hehe
The fertility increasing thing is true, so I decided to minimize risk and get an IUD about 6 weeks pre-op. I have to say, it was worth the discomfort (and I was a difficult insertion) to not have to take a pill every day and not worry about forgetting them and getting pregnant.
I do want to have children, which is part of why I had WLS. But I want the best scenario for them so I plan on waiting at least 18 months if not more to try. If you get pregnant in your first year you have basically wasted the "honeymoon" part of this surgery and won't be as likely to meet goal.
I've been told that no matter when you have kids after surgery, you will be considered "high risk". But I just take that as an opportunity to have closer monitoring and more ultrasound pictures!

Well, apparently I am the best one to answer this question. I had RNY on November 6th and found out I was pregnant on January 15th. SUPER early after surgery! TWH put me on the birth control patch about 3 months before I had my surgery.....they FAILED to inform me that I should use two methods of birth control and they also failed to tell me that the patch has not been tested in women over 180 pounds and therefore they do not know how effective it is.
I am almost 24 weeks pregnant now and baby boy and I are doing fantastic!! He is growing amazingly and I feel fantastic.
I want to note that becoming pregnant in the first year does NOT in any way affect the honeymoon period of weight loss. I have continued to loose weight while pregnant (down about 118 pounds in 6 months!!) The doctors are fine with me loosing weight as long as I am eating as healthy as possible. You CANNOT use the pregnancy as an excuse to go back to bad eating habits!!!!
I will fully admit that my situation is NOT ideal, but we are pro life and there was no decision necessary here....even though we thought we were done having children (I have 5 year old twins and an 18 month old).
I am being followed at a high risk clinic.....but primarily because I have been high risk with all of my kids due to other, non weight loss surgery, reasons. I think the reason I have done so well with the pregnancy is that I can tolerate everything!! I have yet to find a food that does not agree with me. Also, I am apparently NOT a dumper and can eat whatever I want. I have indulged on occasion, with no ill effects. I truly feel my RNY surgery is about creating a lifetime of habits. I will not deny myself every single sugary food or carbonated beverage for the rest of my life....I just know how to set and follow limitations....and its working for me!
Soooo....in conclusion I do fully recommend waiting the full 2 years before becoming pregnant, but if something happens and you do become pregnant, it is not necessarily going to be a bad experience.
