I have surgery coming up on the 14th at HRRH. Can anyone tell me are we given a catheter for this surgery, and if so, are we asleep when we get it? I have had one in the past for a previous surgery and the outcome of the catheter was NOT good. I couldn't pee on my own for 6 wks. Had to learn to self catheterize...and it was so painful not to mention the infection I got. Scared to death of that again. I have been reading on here the couple days and people are saying they had one??

I don't remember if I had one, but I don't remember that far back. If you don't have any appointments before your PATTs, mention it then.  Not sure what the outcome will be, but they'll be aware and can make a decision with that knowledge.

You have one in Ottawa...I would assume it is the same wherever you have your RNY? They put it in after you are out and take it out before you wake up....

I had VSG at Hamilton and I did have a catheter. I think it is more about the surgeon's preferences than anything else. Generally yes if they put one in it is done after you are sedated and out before you wake up. I still had mine in when I woke up and I think it was an oversite but actually I was quite happy because I was having loads of pain the first day and so happy that I didn't have to get out of bed. However if this has been a problem before definitely tell them about it in your pre-op appointment.
