Pain?
What do we use for pain now that we cannot use NSAIDS or even Voltaren?
I'm still about a month pre-op. I have severe pain in my feet and one knee that really limits my walking. My GP says Tylenol only, but it doesn't touch the pain.
Any suggestions?
Jane
Are you using the regular Tylenol or the prescribed extra strength one? Your doctor should have other ideas for you - if not you could ask the pharmacist, making sure to tell him or her that you can't have nsaids. Not sure if this will help but I found ice packs were extremely effective at helping with my knee pain from severe arthritis. A brace for the knee might also help depending on what the issue is. Let us know how things turn out and what worked for you. good luck!
I have a badly injured left knee & Dr Hagen has okayed the anti inflammatory rubs for me. Talk with your surgeon.

You can get tylenol with codeine from the pharmacy (don't think codeine is an nsaid). you have to ask for it, but it's all that works for me (still pre-op)

I have two things to say.
1. have you ever used orthotics? i used to have incredible knee pain that severely limited my walking, but after using properly fitted orthotics, the pain resolved.
2. After you lose weight, the pain in your knee will likely lessen.
okay, three things. Physio? and applying ice...
that was four things. oops.
This is one of the main reasons that I changed my mind, from the RNY to the sleeve. I'm still pre-op, but after seeing my elderly parent and in laws health, I didn't want to not be able to take most of the drugs that they need, (Nsaid). Also I take Mobic for pain and inflammation. I can finally MOVE without pain! I don't want to give it up.
But that doesn't help, you, I know :( My mother in law, who has had bypass, can take oxycotin... but not sure if she's supposed to.
NOTHING has helped me so far. Not even losing 80lbs. The main reason i finally got the rny was becasue i am bone on bone in both knees and needed to lose 100lbs before they would even consider giving me the surgery.
Before rny, i was taking anti-inflammatories and some narcotic pain relievers and it was manageble. I also did phsyio for a year (no help), accupunture, got orthotics, did the cortisone and synvisc shots, got the very expensive knee brace and still no relief.
Right now i am on a very high dose of narcotics and i really don't want to be. This only allows me to get up and attend work. I am not really living :-(. The bright side is, another surgery consult in less than 2 weeks. I am hoping that they will give me at least 1 new knee. Fingers crossed!
good luck to you! i have heard that voltaren is a no-go too. my doc also said that i was not a candidate for the sleeve, even though i really pushed for it because of the meds i was on.
