pre-op and post-op

I am curious what kind of pre and post op diets drs are putting you all on in Ontario.  I am from London Ontario but due to low BMI of 33 I have decided to go to Mexico.  I had a lapband before which failed and I decided to remove it after paying $12000.  GGRR

Every center is different... I went through Guelph and they seem to be very strict..

Pre-op... I did 2 weeks of "optifast" (a prescription meal replacement of 900 calories a day) and 1/2 a cup of clear broth per day.  No juice, pop, caffeine, or sugary drinks.

Post-op... I did 1 week of clear liquids, SF jello, broth, and diluted 50/50 cranberry juice (I hate apple juice but it was allowed).

Next was 3 weeks of full liquids, apple sauce (no added sugar), SF pudding, milk, yogurt (no fruit chunks), cottage cheese (I hate this too, lumpy milk.. yeah no thanks), strained cream of soups, oatmeal / cream of wheat cereals (I could not tolerate them... still can't).  My center does not want us using protein shakes but I think almost all other centers allow them.

By the end of 3 weeks I had moved into soft foods diet.. trying to get in my 60 grams of protein.

I am almost 6 weeks out and I still don't get my 60 grams of protein in a day... I just can't eat that much.  Eggs, string cheese, "grok" crackers, fish, greek yogurt, and edamame are my staples; chicken and turkey are hard for me (I can only get a couple of bites in).  I tryed a Tim Hortens chilly just 2 bites and that was a no go and 2 hours of pain... corn nibbets are a no go too I was in pain for 2 hours before I threw them up (I only had 2 tsp).  My water is good, I love me some water I get in 2 liters a day no problem.

I would be curious as to why your center doesn't not want protein shakes used?

I am having my surgery at Humber River in Toronto and they encourage the protein shakes due to not being able to get enough protien in right after surgery especialy.

You might want to try the Unjury chicken soup mix, it tastes really good and is packed with protein, 20 grams I think but do not have a packet at the moment to check.

They want us to get our protein from food and protein shakes may be linked to gallstones. Shakes would be nice and easy since I do struggle to get my protein in. Michelle

Interesting... it kinda sucks.  Protein shakes would be easy... I just don't like the lectures the dietitian gives me.

Good luck in Mexico!

Pre-op was 3 weeks of Opti.

Post-op was clear fluids in hospital (2 days), 1 week full fluids, whi*****luded protein shakes, 1 week purée, 1 week soft, then regular diet for life.

Now, people could take up to 2 weeks to move through each stage if they weren't ready to move up a level yet. It really depends on how you are tolerating the textures at each level. Also, by 4-6 weeks, they prefer you get all if your protein from food, not shakes. But, I know most people need to use shakes or bars for life to get enough protein each day.

The big things were getting 60-90 grams of protein each day, 8 glasses of water & all the vitamins.

I went through Ottawa in March 2013.

Pre-Op - I did 3 weeks of Optifast - was allowed clear broth and 2 cups green loa calorie vegetables (lettuce, brocolli, celery and cucumbers)

Post-Op - 3 days clear fluids - 1 week full fluids - 1 week pureed - 2 weeks soft food. My center encourages protein shakes if you are unable to get protein in through food. I track my intake and if by the end of the day I am under my protein goal I drink a shake
